I get the same result ("The page cannot be displayed") in that case.

You shouldn't get anything at all in the browser window, even if the
URL is 404. Instead, either nothing will happen, or the page will be
displayed raw in notepad. Something ain't right.

Well, then this trick just doesn't work somehow for my IE version (6).
However I try it, "view-source: http://..." or
"view-source:http://...", I end up
with the same error ("The page cannot be displayed").

Same here with IE6 under XPpro.(Doesn't work)
It works with IE6 under Win98se.(No space after view-source:)

Yes, when I do "view-source" on *anything* even with http://www.google.ca I
get "page not displayed" This happens on WindowsXP. However on Windows 98
I get a notepad display.
However right-clicking the link and selecting "save target as" gets the URL
to download.
When saving change the extension from htm to txt. It will then download as a
text file.

How strange; it works on Win2k, and on XP at my workplace (which is
special build of some sort).

See if this works. Look for a saved .htm or .html file on your hard
drive and open it with IE. Then prepend "view-source:file:///"
(without the quotes) to the name in the address bar and press return.

Same result.
I'm using Firefox on another XP machine and I use that when I want to view
source on a questionable site. I hope someone knows of a work-around with
IE.

Yes, like Hoosier Daddy mentioned earlier in this thread. That's fairly
straightforward, but I was just wondering why the 'view-source:' thingy
didn't work for me (using IE 6 under XP pro).

Doesn't work for me either with local files.
Prepending "file:///" loads the same file without problems, but as soon
as I prepend "view-source:file:///" I get the same old "The page cannot
be displayed" error.

UPDATE:

| Trend sysclean does not find exploit code in in a test HTML file as McAfee
does.

| C:\Suspect\suspect.html JS/Exploit-HelpXSite

I submitted the HTML file to Trend Micro and they will now detect this as a
Trojan Exploit "HTML_PHEL.CU"

It could be about the increased security settings in SP2:
http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips550.html

This seems to involve the "Page cannot be displayed error" in general,
not
in particular when trying to view the source of a webpage in some
unusual way.
See also the bottom of this page for some suggestions:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/archive/index.php/t-33841.html

But this seems to involve 'view source' from the menu (either from the
menu
bar at the top, view>source, or picking it from the pop-up menu when
right-clicking a webpage).
Those things work just fine. It's just that it doesn't seem possible to
invoke this
'view-source:' operation by prepending it in front of the url in the
address entry bar.

Evidently, you are not alone.

Still no resolution to the problem though. They seem to be discussing
the context menu item, but it could be related I suppose. I suspect it
has more to do with IE than XP though because IIRC in Win98 it
worked with the browser address window but not with the taskbar
address window or run dialog (command line) box.

Well, I can't find anything explicit to your problem and don't know
the answer, but the various suggestions at those links may be worth
trying.
