Program of choice was 2m:

ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/utildisk/2m30.zip

Ciriaco Garcia de Celis worked on v4.0, which should get lots of
improvements. Unfortunately, he never finished it. IIRC, he got
his call-up order. And later on, floppy disks may not have looked
an interesting target any more...

There are some GUIs and utility programs to support this pure DOS
tool:

ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/utildisk/2mgui19.zip
ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/utildisk/2mutls1b.zip
ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/utildisk/2mrep-uk.zip

Another good command line high-formatter is FDFormat by Christoph
Hochstätter:

ftp://ftp.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/diskutil/fdfrm18.zip

It is accompanied by source code.

If you like a graphical (but still DOS) one, have a look at VGACopy.
It has been very popular Shareware, but Thomas Mönkemeier declared
it Freeware quite some time ago:

http://www.moenk.de/pages/vgacopy.html

Click <Formfill>, select a format and Click <Write> to just format
an empty disk. Run English.exe beforehand to get English help.

Thinking of that: I suggest you to use DMF format. All other high
formats need special drivers (often copied by the format program
onto the first sectors of the disk) to be read...

this might not be much use to you running win xp. But Windows 98 has a
program called doublespace/drivespace . which could do floppy disks
and incerase their capacity to 2MB. I think it uses compression. I
don't know if the disks would work in Win XP.
They prob got rid of drivespace 'cos it cuased problems. compressing
hard drives. But floppy disks are not such a risk. back them up of
course!

There is a switch on the format command (perhaps not the win xp format
command), which could have been used to format a 720KB disk to 1.44MB.
But it makes it less stable. Since it's the win 9X format command, you'
have to use a boot disk or a win98 machine to use it.

I don't know much about file systems. But 1.77MB seems to be a linux
thing e.g. maybe Not FAT12 . I wonder if Windows could then read it

SuperFormat FAIZ Software

Version: 2.7

Dated: 27 January, 2000

Terms: Freeware

Language: English

Windows Ver: 95 / 98 / ME / NT4

Description: The software changes the way files are stored on
the floppy. It utilises some of the space used by the file system
to increase the storage space to 1.72 MB.

Download: http://195.241.84.246/zdnet/dlweek0127/sformat.zip
(format.zip) (21 Kb)

Additional: Install: No Uninstall: No

Inducted In: 2002 / 2003 / 2004

Notes: Alternate download
http://www.alwaysFreeware.co.uk/diskutils.html

Description: SuperFormat lets you create additional disk space on
a standard 3.5 inch floppy disk. The program formats the floppy
to hold 1.72 MB of data instead of the standard 1.44 MB. It comes
with an adequate help file and is easy to use. NOTES: SuperFormat
runs in a DOS box. Users report that SuperFormat does not format
disks properly in Win 2000/ XP. (Previously formatted disks can
be used in these OS.)

I have previously used the already mentioned SuperFormat with good
results. However, when I try it now under XP it fails to run. It used to
work though, probably under 2K.

What do you intend to use your disk for? Do you want it to contain
documents, or are you trying to fit as much as possible into a boot
floppy? If the latter, you may want to look at UPX
(http://upx.sourceforge.net/). It can compress executables, including
dlls, making your disk much more roomy.

Trouble with that icky system is
a) its _horribly_ slow
b) you cant read the discs from dos
c) and cant boot from them
d) I think its incompatible with non-win systems
e) its a bad choice for archival
f) its problem prone.

Its a lot easier/faster to zip your data and put it on a standard fdd.

Win can read dmf format @1.7M
I'd like to use 2.88M, would make floppies useful a bit more often. But
it seems nothing supports it.

NT

FMT utility will format the 1.44 floppy
to bigger size 1.68 dmf and 1.72/1.77
http://www.paehl.de/home.htm
dmf format can be read in windows in case
of difficulty you load the dmf driver.

To use/format 2.88 size you need a special hardware(Floppy Drive) similiarly
like
120MB floppy drive.

Very surprised that nobody else posted it!
