Your original query with regard toVinum and the SiI 0680s brought to mind
several quirks I've seen with SiI and Promise controllers. Having recently
used a hi-end workstation with an Adaptec 29xxx controller and several 10K
Cheetah hard drives, it was hard to return to the ATA-100 interface.

ATA sucks. But SCSI is too expensive; it's my own cash involved.
The
answer may be as simple as the lack of Tagged Command Queuing support in
PATA hard drives and controllers.

I have tagged queuing turned off for the ATA drives, even though I selected
the drives on the basis that they claim to support it.
In this case, even a HighPoint controller
won't help matters. (I'm fond of HighPoint, in general.)

Can't really think of any other solution right now. :-(

Boy lemme tell ya something about MSI...DAAAAMMMMNNN! Now there's a
company with some customer service. I e-mailed them earlier, sometime
in the late afternoon and they ACTUALLY e-mailed me back! Not only
that, but they e-mailed me back within like FOUR HOURS! o_O

Turns out, the memory is definetly NOT the problem, faster memory will
work just peachy with the 7505s and it is indeed the power supply, you
MUST have both the 24 and 8 pin connector or it simply isn't gonna
work. So, I ordered a Antec True550 EPS12V 550W power supply, which
should get here on Monday or Tuesday and then WOO HOO, new system will
be fully operational! That's no moon...IT'S A SPACE STATION! `, )

WOW real service!!!! Tell everyone!!!!!

Four dual Xeons 2.4GHz, dual PSUs, 2G memory, Ultra-160. I get way more
more CPU bang from a 2*1.8GHz Athlon box, FWIW; the Xeons are supposed
to be better for I/O. Are you sure you really want Xeons? Too late!

Oh yes, quite sure. Unlike most people I know who buy powerful systems simple for the point of
playing computer games...I don't...EVER. Games are for the PS2, not for the computer, that's my
motto. I'm gonna use the new system for animation, rendering, video editing and encoding, so the
Xeon is DEFINITELY the way to go.
Hmmm... I dunno about that...

Where the hell do you live? And what's the housing market like if you don't mind my asking.

Vinum's only ever given me shit when I patched in the "preferred plex" hacks,
then forgot at the next upgrade. Bye-bye volume.

Ever since I discovered SiI was just a new name for CMD I've started
suspecting the controllers. FFS, the disks shouldn't -still- be giving
me spurious R/W errors, after 9 months burn-in. But the box just hangs
with Promise TX2s (Asus+Athlon+IBM/Hitachi, known bummer), which were
my first choice. Should I try some Highpoints instead?

What's this limitation, btw, please?

'scuse the piggyback.

Uh, which froup am I in now?

alt.comp.hardware, some of teh regs apparently don't like to share with teh other groups though.
Tsk, tsk, tsk...

Perhaps a RAID5 solution might be in order for you. Four drives configured
in RAID 0 would yield upward of 140MB/sec. Of course this would mean daily
backups. Another solution is a single 15K SCSI as a boot drive and IDE
storage.

Not sure if Green Dappled Monotremata is out of AHM or A26...*scratches head*...AHM I *think*...but
just to be sure.

I use that dual Athlon as a compile engine. It's certainly faster at that
task than the Xeon boxes are.

Manchester.

Great for sellers, near impossible for buyers. Prices go up by about 100
kiloquid every year.
