I got a 9200 card. The picture quality is great, video and dvd are both
superb... but the drivers suck big time. I installed the drivers from the
Gigabyte driver cd and wrecked my system beyond repair. I even had to
reinstall windows.

ATI have a good product they wreck with bad drivers. The same with
Creative Labs...

Yes ATI drivers could be better but you have to look at the whole system. I
cured my problems (so far) with the 3.9 drivers on my 9600 Pro by updating
my VIA 4in1 mobo drivers and re-installing DX9.0b. I had the same probs
with NVidia drivers and certainly wouldnt go back to them. I still think
ATI currently have the best product.

I've got everything working OK, the B1942 problem is well known and I expect to be
fixed in the Cat3.9/4.0 drivers. I score 5250 with an XP2000 and a 9800Pro,
should I be getting more ?

No idea, James. All I know is that it's a well known problem here that when
you change from ATi to NVidia, or the other way round, it's likely that
remnants from the old drivers (even though properly uninstalled) are likely
to affect the performance of the new card and drivers. Many people (myself
included) carry out a good system clean even when just upgrading drivers,
let alone changing cards, because the uninstall routines are so bad. What
you're saying about using one manufacturer's card for some time, then
changing to the other and having problems is a common complaint, and has
nothing to do with one card and drivers being better than the other. It's
simply due to unremoved elements of the old drivers. If you look in your
system file folders, you'll find plenty of unremoved NVidia files, and if
you look in your registry, you'll find lots of NVidia references that
haven't been removed.

I believe there's a program for removing NVidia remnants (ATi have also
finally produced an ATi driver cleaner, although reports don't seem to be in
yet as to how effective it is) which you should be able to find in NVidia
groups or forums. Running this is likely to improve the general performance
of your current card.

Cat 3.9s are out now - how are you making out with them?

I used Drivercleaner to get rid of the nvidia drivers and I don't think it's a
problem. Thousands of people are having the same problems and most of them have
upgraded from Cat 3.7 to 3.8, no Nvidia drivers in the equation. Clearly from
reading this newsgroup and reading the official B1942 forums it's a problem with
Cat3.8.

I have no intention of changing from 3.8, I still have Call of Duty in it's case
because it craps up as soon as I attempt to get the bazooka from the church so
I've uninstalled it and I'm waiting till a patch comes out. The game has only
been tested on Cat 3.7s, how many games due for release anytime soon will have
only been tested on 3.8s. Ati drivers are clearly NOT backwards compatible, you
only need to read the flood of people already saying they're going back to 3.7s
from 3.9s, so I would only be wasting my time trying them.

I'll wait until the market has caught up with the 3.8s and everything is working
fine and then keep this driver for probably the lifetime of the card, there's no
need to use the latest driver unless the Changelog specifically mentions a fix for
a problem you are having.

I have 3.9's, and I am halfway thru the game. It must be a real crapshoot
whether or not your setup "accepts" the new drivers. Oh, well, gotta go
cover someone while he blows the bridge to stop the German pursuit.

I was using the 3.9's tonight playing COD and my machine locked up. I
stopped, waited a minute, and the VPU was reset by the driver. I continued
to play. Very cool. When I finished, I was dropped back to my desktop at
the resolution the game was at.
