I just installed the 3.8 drivers. Games like Mafia and Splinter cell would
always lock my machine up. With the new drivers it doesn't lock anymore!
However, It does return to the desktop and give me an error. Sometimes I
can even return to the game. Other times it will close the game completely.
It's still not perfect but it's a lot better than having to restart my
machine.

Propably the new VPU feature, that prevents a graphic driver error from
completely messing up the system (for the most part anyway).

You still cannot play the games but you are happy? Dont be satisfied with
this. Many people are playing these games with no probs so there has to be
a solution. Post your setup and symptoms and I'm sure there are folk that
can help. Shawk

Well happy is a slight overstatement I guess. I am pleased that my computer
no longer freezes. Yes, I would like to play the games without any
problems. So no I'm not satisfied. Games using Hardware T&L freeze during
play. I've had this problem with both of my machines. Both of them have a
via chipset and an AMD processor. So I'm guessing either the ATI drivers
aren't compatible with the chipset and/or processor or the card is damaged
in some way. However lots of people have had this problem so I think it's
an incompatability issue. Anyway, here are the specs:

Compaq Presario S3010CL-B
256 MB PC 2100 RAM
Athlon XP 2200+
VIA KM266 chipset
ATI Radeon 8500 using Catalyst 3.8 Drivers
Latest Chipset Drivers

i was using a program to force refresh rates, and it caused big problems.
halo would constantly freeze before i even had a chance to play, and i would
have to restart. i got rid of it, and now i have no problems. just a note in
case you use something like that

Do you have FAST WRITES enabled (in bios and in drivers)? Sometimes causes
problems with VIA chipset motherboards.

See if there's any advice here

Try dropping the AGP rate as well. You might get more stability at AGP2x.

LOL, that is pretty sad. The 3.8 drives are crappier than the 3.7s.
They still have problems in lots of older games, and some old demos,
and they still crash the system sometimes.
I think you need to open up the dictionary and look up 'love'. :P
Some of the games/demos, Tribes 2, 3dmark 2k, raster saver (screen
saver) pipes (screensaver--has random polygons missing), and I could
go on and on... ATI still has LOTS of work to do on their drivers.
Don't get me wrong, they are allot better than the old rage 128 days,
but they still pale to Nvidia's drivers.

I totally agree! I got a little carried away lol. I was just pleased that
my computer didn't lock. Yeah, ATI still has a long way to go. When I have
the money I'm going to switch to an FX 5600.

Yep going to dump this 2 week old 9800Pro and get a 5700 or the 5950 if it comes
out in the next month or so, lifes to short to put up with all this BS. I've
never been able to get B1942 working decently even when setting a similar refresh
rate to my monitor.

I don't know what drivers you installed, I think the 3.8's are
awesome, but I switched to the Omega's and they are even better.

to each his own yadda yadda. Keep in mind I don't benchmark or
anything, I play it by7 sight, and t looks good. Movies, games,
porno, look awesome, simply awesome.

f*** nvidia, ATI are FAR superior, I'm never going back.

BF1942 runs fantastically on my 9700 (non-pro) ,
I take it you have used a program to fix windows XP's shitty default 60Hz
(assuming XP)
and set:

renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0

in VideoDefault.con to fix it for BF1942?

There is a common problem with VIA-chipped mainboards. This has probably
nothing to do with the ATI videocard nor its drivers. Especially since the
same happens with NVidia chipset VGA-cards.

A friend of mine complained that he couldn't play EA-sports games on his
rig. He changed all things execpt ths mainboard. The odd thing is that he
has another setup with a SIS-chipset which is a bit slower then tha
equavallent VIA-chipset setup but the SIS-rig runs everything perfect.

Do you really think NVidia is really any better?

Nowadays whether it's ATI or NVidia they all make the same crap. (Usually
the H/W is good but the software is crap)

What is there to think about? If you've been using Nvidia cards for the last 5
years without a single problem, then decide to try out an ATI card and suddenly
your spending more time getting the drivers to work than playing the games, of
course your going to KNOW ATI are crap. The worse thing is people are going back
to Cat 3.7, using it without problems on exactly the same hardware and operating
system. If the drivers were working fine then why change anything ???

Thanks for the link. That's a good site. I installed the 3.9 drivers.
Still have the problem. I turned off the error reporting feature on the vpu
recover. Now when there's an error the game flickers for a moment and I can
continue playing. However, I'm still going to switch to an nvidia card when
i can afford it and get a new motherboard with an nforce2 chipset

Sounds like you may have NVidia remnants in your system, James - both ATi
and NVidia cards suffer from each other's inadequate uninstall routines when
changing brand.

I got a 9200 card. The picture quality is great, video and dvd are both
superb... but the drivers suck big time. I installed the drivers from the
Gigabyte driver cd and wrecked my system beyond repair. I even had to
reinstall windows.

ATI have a good product they wreck with bad drivers. The same with
Creative Labs...

I've got everything working OK, the B1942 problem is well known and I expect to be
fixed in the Cat3.9/4.0 drivers. I score 5250 with an XP2000 and a 9800Pro,
should I be getting more ?
