Is there anywhere (credible) I can read about this? It seems bizarre.

R.

I wish I could narrow it down for you but I read a lot of NGs and
chase down interesting references. One comment in July '03 about XP
slowness was answered, "The problem with one component of the service
pack (Q811493) has been well-known for several months now, and a fix for
it has already been released." When I pursued the subject, I ran across
a statement about the original XP.

"They made this appear to be separate from the update you mentioned.
The main reason was Microsoft said it had actually slowed it down
because of some timing issues with the drivers that was causing problem
on perfectly good hardware (making them look bad) even though they had
passed the quality testing program."

I don't think it is any big deal. It's past history, and nothing can be
done about it. I have text files compressed into 116 meg of archives.
Within this, I have a small archive of 112 references to XP. I only save
what I think may be pertinent in the future, in case I ever decide to go
XP. I have never had an XP system.

If you would care to pursue it yourself, here's a list of the more
probable sources of where I saw the discussion:

It could also have been in one of the NGs I read. A google search
of these NGs, on 'XP slow', is another possibility.

XP is still way too fast on my machine. It unzips files before I even have
time click on them. :)
