No but my wife is a horsy person and used to teach riding and she has been glued to the TV over the last couple of days.:(

Never gamble. It's a mug's game IMO.

Shame about the two horses that had to be put down. :(

agree shame about the horses being put down, but their are other sports that are the same.

You dont see footbalers being put downwhen they break a leg. I must admit I did watch the National but I feel it is cruel and also think that in 50 years it will not be run or at least not in its present form and if it is the jumps will be user friendly. My wife disagrees with me she reckons the horses enjoy it, They wouldent if the knew they were likly to be put down if they injure themselves. :(

it's a subject where some see it as a sport others dont.
i'm not going to start a debate on it as i respect others views.
but yes, it has got more dangerous over the years.

Here's the bit that nobodytlls you when you put your bet down at the local booky.

In races like the Grand National horses quite often over exert themselves. Horses are prone to nose bleeds and blleding on the lungs. To prevent this vets/trainers inject the horses with high doses of Lasix which is a diuretic. It lowers the horses blood pressure which helps stop the bleeding, it sadly has the effect that makes the horse urinate a lot, some horses upto two gallons. when they urinate they are losing all kinds of fluds, salts etc which are vital to thier health, and vital to preventing dehydration.
The effect of the lowering of blood pressure also increases adrenaline in the horses.
And aftr they have run they have yet more injections to bring blood pressure upto normal

All this is not normal for a horse. And for todays race out of 40 starters only 15 finished. Is that not saying something ?

And for those that have ever wondered where the saying " P*ss like a race horse " came rom, well there you have it :D

Name me one :)

Polo? Don't think so.

But there's, lemme see, Badger baiting; cock fighting; dog fighting (bring your own Pitbull) ; Bull fighting; Fox Hunting and if you live in the USA anything that moves in the countryside is fair game, bears, foxes, rabbits, coyotes; deer and next door's puddy tat if it strays too far :D

And most of those are illegal, of course.

I will confess right now I have shot rabbits. Then eaten them.

I did not mean with horses, i meant sport in general.
i'm not going to get into an argument on which sport is the safest.

No, I don't favour an argument/debate but as I see it most sports involve humans principally who go about their chosen sport aware of the risks, wehereas in some horse races - and certainly not all - the horses are pushed by humans and remain ignorant of the risks they are taking which may end in their death.

Although I'm not a fan of gambling or horse racing I think the whole spectacle, Ascot and all, is a fine thing, part of this country's history and imagine a nice day out for a lot of folks, long may it survive, but The Grand National?

In my opinion it belongs in the past, time it was scrapped, or just run the race without the hurdles, perhaps.

I wholeheartedly agree with you Mr Flops, the Grand National belongs in the days of bare knuckle boxing and when gentlemen wore top hats.

Never been interested in sport so I did not watch the big race.It puzzles me as to who wins in these horse races-- is it the horse or the rider?

We like rabbit meat but you can`t buy it any more,or at least we can`t find it around here.
It was the most common meat for the working class at one time. Rabbit was introduced into England by the Romans. And very valuable meat to medieval people in the winter time.

Very tastey, but me no like rabit had to much as a child:(, but phesant slurp, slurp:drool:
