In the last few days there were IMHO too many off-topic postings (including
some of my postings).

Sorry but I refuse to believe that someone meeting the requirements
to use either VB.NET or VS.NET posesses a 2KB modem,
it costs as little as $10 to buy a 56k modem,

There are certain areas on the world where faster connections are impossible
at the moment.

I must agree actually. I'll set up a news-server for Off-Topic dotnet chat.

Hi Herfried,

Ah yes, like the local borough library system - 1MB Broadband shared
between 500 users. (Or so it seems)

Ain't no-one making you follow dem freds, man. We's got plenty serious
goin' on too.

Too true, but saying that, with a 350mhz processor you can whip through the
entire newsgroup in a matter of nano seconds and reply to every single
thread!! Turn the turbo button off on the front of your PC Herfried ;-)

Nick.

(Turbo button, what a useless invention!!!)

Hi Nick, Herfried, Tom

I was an alterboy once - got sacked cos I couldn't perform my duties
seriously. Here, I think we have the right balance. But I'm not sure that
Father Wagner agrees. :-)

My guess is that it's more a case of Herfried feeling that he's neglecting
his flock. And he's talking to himself while looking at you/us (it makes it
easier to self-admonish that way).

What do you reckon Herfried, is this a reaction to the humour level or a
reaction to how much you've been getting involved in it?. Ask your Higher
Self for the truth on this.

My only problem with off-topic sub-threads is that the indentation gets
too great and the subject disappears off the screen!

Regards all,
Fergus

Hi Tom,

|| I'll set up a news-server for Off-Topic dotnet chat.

With all due respect, I wouldn't use it. The intertwining of advice-giving
and humour within the one newsgroup is what makes it work. Much of the humour
sparks off the topics. To have to go somewhere else to crack a joke is to not
bother. I'm already playing monkey - climbing up and down the threads here
(not a complaint) but to do it in two newsgroups? (insert complaint).

If you feel that our "customers" are not getting good service that's one
thing, but I'd like to be shown evidence of that first.

It <is> a choice whether to follow the off-topic sub-threads. Once you're
satisfied that a query has been answered you can mark it as to-be-ignored. And
off you go for another one without being disturbed by those highlights.

Personally, I find that the humour adds a lot and any downside is
outweighed by the benefits.

Regards,
Fergus

ps. Think Buddhist - nothing is eternal.

I certainly was joking about setting it up, because it takes too long.
Humour is certainly acceptable, but sometimes, it is taken too far.

Maybe you should write up a "code of conduct" for all of the rebels that use
this newsgroup, so they don't over step the line.

There will be much smiting with sticks I presume?

Hi Fergus,

Very well put, as usual. I'm not quite understanding why humour would
offend anyone, it's not as if a high percentage of the threads in this
newsgroup are off topic. I would be more offended by anyone possessing a 2k
modem and actually using the newsgroup, in theory it would be quicker to use
an infrared modem being bounced off of a collection of mirrors strategically
placed to enable the light to bounce all the way to the Microsoft news
server and back, or simply use 2 paper cups and a piece of thread ;-) (I do
believe you know of such a piece of thread that would come in handy for such
circumstances).

Maybe we could all pitch together and make a new kind of broadband, a 5
terabyte Infrared link, the LED would probably have to be 60 foot in
diameter and induce cancerous blisters to anyone standing in it's path but
it may work!! What do you say? Shall we give it a go? Or maybe even
develop a new type of thread for the paper cup connections?

Anyway, I VOTE HUMOUR!

Nick.

I've been posting help to this group for almost a year, and previously I've
been posting help for a over a year to the microsoft.public.vb.winapi group.
In the past few weeks, I've never seen such an abundance of OT postings, and
certainly have never been involved in many.

I'm just not used to it, and prefer to keep to the topic, rather than
digressing. So, yes, answering your question to Herfried, but in the context
of myself, I'd say that it's a reaction to how much I've been getting
involved.

(I realise the irony about posting an OT post to explain OT posts)

Tom,
I just don't know.
Humor and humor are 2.
Did you watch how much help Fergus did provide last days.
He does that with a lot of humor but too with terrific quality.
And when he thinks the next day, I did make a mistake, he corrects himself.
But maybe he loves to do something more.
He says that that gives him a good feeling.
I like mostly Fergus his humor because it is combinated with good help and
seldom flat and often it gives something to think about.
:-)

I don't have enough time to write lots of OT postings. 100 postings/day are
enough.

Fergus,
I just got a hyperlink from Herfried,
This text was there
We pay US$1.3 per hour for a connection that goes little over
1.2Kbps. :-( However, I'm most certainly not supporting those people that
are moaning for having to download an extra 24Kb. Really, is a few extra
seconds downloading in the your life really going to hurt you that much?
Come on! If I can do it without complaint in South Africa, where calls are
expensive and bandwidth is low, then anyone can do it!

It was about getting Internet Speed Information.
He has double.

Some people are reading the ng because they want to learn VB .NET. Some of
them do not want to read jokes in every 2nd posting.
