If you want to just get your feet wet with Linux then I suggest

its about a 50mb iso and will run super fast on your Win98Se based
system. It runs pretty fast on my AMD K6-2 550.
Its a very low-fat distro and if you wish you can install it to your
hard drive or run it from a USB Key.
Too many distros these days include KDE3 or Gnome, when window
managers like XFCE, Fluxbox, Blackbox, IceWM (much like Windows) not
only look great but use less cpu/ram and do the job well.
