Laptop doesn't show in its own Net Neighborhood

Just found this at the MSKB:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q197769

<q>
SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect a computer to itself using its Universal Naming
Convention (UNC) name, you may receive the following error message:

Windows 98:
\\<Computername> is not accessible. Unknown Error 2114.

<snip>

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks is
installed without file and printer sharing.

</q>
It then goes on to tell how to enable sharing. However, I already had file
and printer sharing enabled. Dunno.
One last try.
Are you sure it wasn't error 1214 ?

Yep.

The requests time out.

You couldn't even *ping* Thurston?

<scratching head>

Even if he's not showing up in Maxie's NN, I can still ping him.

*File sharing's* a no-go, in that condition, but they're both pingable.

Did you already try to "search for Computers" using your laptops
hostname?

I feel I was incomplete before:

When I do a search, it shows up in the listing as DW Mobile, with its
location as being the DIVWIND workgroup. When I double-click it, I get:

"\\DW Mobile is not accessible." and either "Unknown error 2114" or "Not
logged on."

When I right-click and ask for properties, I get the following message:

"The server \\DW Mobile does not accept remote requests."

When I click the Okay button on that error message, I get a Properties
window for DW Mobile. However, nothing is listed in any of the fields on
the General tab except

Comment: Presario 1930
Workgroup: DIVWIND
Type: (blank)

Under the Tools tab, System Monitor is the only thing available, and when I
click it I'm told that it can't connect.

I checked under CP/Network, and all my settings are intact.

As a check, I did a search on my desktop. The desktop shows up at DIVMAIN,
location in Network Neighborhood. When I look at properties, it lists

Comment: (blank)
Workgroup: DIVWIND
User logged in: (my name)
Logon domain DIVWIND
Type: Microsoft Networking file and print

Under the tools tab, nothing is available.

I hope this helps.

Wow, now I learned something new.

And I assume you already tried to remove and reinstall it, without
changing the situation. :(

Oh, yeah - I removed *everything* from the network settings, and reinstalled
them.
Sorry, I don't have any clue other than reinstalling the whole OS.

I hope you'll find a better way to solve this.

Me, too!

Hey - that MSKB could be useful - I just found an article called "Only
Entire Network Icon Appears in Network Neighborhood". That's me!!! :)

It lists a number of suggestions:

-- Make sure that the NIC's settings are assigned automatically (already
exists)
-- Move the NIC to another slot (Done - no effect)
-- Verify that no resource conflicts exist (None exist)
-- Disable PCI bus IRQ steering. (Did nothing but disable my modem)
-- Change the BIOS settings for the IRQ tpo ISA (no effect)

Ah, well.

Let's debug the file and printer sharing, although I think you already
checked that.(I'm still clueless.)

Open the properties of Network.
File and printer sharing is installed as a service, you said.
Click the file and printer sharing button an make sure both options
are enabled.
At the "primary logon" field should be found "Windows-logon".
When you open the "TCP/IP-->(your NIC)" properties and go to the
"Bindings"(or similar [*1])-tab file and printer sharing needs to be
checked.
Properties of file and printersharing should list
"search function"[*1] as automatically.

[*1] only have a german version here.

I did, but it certainly can't hurt to do it again.

I don't have that, but I have "Browse Master" (currently disabled) and "LM
Announce" (currently set to "No").

<checking my desktop config>

Ahhh....my desktop Browse Master is set to "Automatic"....

<changing>

Still nothing. :/

In that case it seems like a problem with the connection between the
two computers.
Each would seem to be talking to itself but not the other.

No, if you look, you'll see that the problem is that one machine only has
"Entire Network" in NN, and nothing else. That network is unbrowsable.
