sometimes when I restart, I end up in bios .. and it asked me if I want to
save the changes and exit... I'm very nervous about doing that as I have not
made any changes to my knowlege and wonder if a virus has made some changes
in bios and wants me to save them... I never do.. I'm chicken.. lol Should
I? why am I there? thanks Rainy

Hi Rainy,

You need to replace the BIOS battery, it is resetting to defaults when you
power off. It is a fairly simple thing to do, the battery is about the size
of a US nickel, and is easily exchanged. If you don't have a motherboard
manual, pop the cover off and use a small flashlight to look at the existing
one to get the right size. Most electronics stores will have these.

are they expensive~! thanks for the input... appreciated... Rainy

Oh yes, incredibly so... The one for your system will set you back around
$5,000. ;o) <eg>

No, they're not expensive, around $4 US.

well I knew the person who said $5000 was being really really funny.. :))
but since I have never replaced one I thought it best to ask... another
question... how do I know which brand or type to get? I have Aida32
installed, and it can tell me what I need to know.. but don't know where to
look??? I'm assuming in the motherboard? thanks Rainy

The person who said $5,000 wasn't being 'funny' rainy she was just being her
normal obnoxious self. As usual she has an axe to grind and, obviously, too
much time on her hands.

Yes, it's on the motherboard. Brand doesn't matter and most
computers these days use a flat disk around the size of US
quarter. Look in your computer manual or at the motherboard
itself to be sure.

thanks so much.. hope office max has them.. as we don't really have a
computer store where i live in clinton Iowa... Rainy

You're welcome. Office Max probably does. If they don't, you may
have a store that specializes in different types of batteries;
those usually carry them.

Worst case, you can order one on the internet.

is there a difference between the cmos and or the bios battery or is it one
and the same? Rainy

There's anly one battery on the motherboard. These are
essentially two names for the same thing.

Oh FFS, John, didn't you see the 'smiley'?! Don't you know what <eg> means?!
If you don't like my posts, then you know what you can do, you disgrace to
the MVP programme. If you and Carey are the standard, then it really isn't
much for anyone to aspire to, now is it?

You have the potential to be of some use to this newsgroup but you choose
not to be. I am not the only person sick of your snide remarks - and no they
are not all MVP's. How can I or Carey for that matter be a disgrace to the
MVP programme? I've been an MVP for 5 years continuously now offering advice
not only in the newsgroups, but also on my website and the computer press. I
am sure Carey has been an MVP for even longer. But perhaps the reason for
your resentment towards MVP's in general is the fact that both I and Carey
have MVP after our names and you DON'T!

Hi Rainy,

It's probably already dead. That is why the system resets to the defaults.
Replacing it with a healthy battery will likely resolve the issue. The
battery supplies power to the BIOS (or CMOS chip) so that it retains its
settings when the system is powered off. What is happening to you is that
when it is powered off, there is no retention of the settings because there
is no battery power to the chip so, by design, the motherboard goes to
defaults and enters the BIOS so that you can either accept these or change
them to settings you prefer. The term CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide
Semiconductor) is a description of the type of chip that holds the BIOS
(Basic Input/Output System) information.

Most are size 2032 3V Lithium batteries available at Wal-mart, Radio Shack,
Circuit City, etc, for about $3.
