Knoppix 3.2

*Modem: Rockwell Conexant Soft K56, Data ,Fax, Voice, Speaker phone PCI modem.

This may or may not work. There are some Conexant drivers for Linux
IIRC. Go here for Winmodem info: http://www.linmodems.org/
*Printer: Canon S200SP.

www.linuxprinting.org considers this a "paperweight" (i.e.,
unsupported) according to this page:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-S200

However a couple comments on it indicated somebody got it to work
using Turboprint drivers (Turboprint is a commercial driver supplies
IIRC).
*Burner: LITE-ON LTR-40125S, Nero 6

Burner should work.

Doesn't look like a lot of your hardware is directly supported,
unfortunately.

If you already have Windows, there's little reason to move to Linux/Knoppix.
It's not yet a very good desktop.
The "raison d'etre" of Knoppix is not to move from Win to Lin but to
become accustomed to a Linux distro in preparing for the time _after_
WinXP - the kernel 2.6 (which you will find in Knoppix 3.4) seems to
be well advanced...

Does it finally support my onboard VIA AC97 soundchip? Until now, it
won't, neither the usual way, nor with ALSA.

Interesting, my ASUS A7V8X mobo has an integrated Via AC97 soundchip
and Red Hat 7.3 with ALSA and Knoppix V3.3 both handle it fine.

The problem is, it is an onboard chip within a notebook (a FIC A380),
and its producver stopped building and supporting soundchip around the
time this notebook was built. The device manager declared it was a
SoundMAX chip, but Knoppix detects it as VIA AC97, and the VIA sound
drivers do work on it (and they are way newer than the SoundMAX stuff).

Still, I get only a loop of the initial starting sound, and that's it.
Running the sound configuration from within (a commandline tool) results
in detecting the AC97 and then telling me that this chip currently is
not supported (at least it doesn't hang like in the pervious versions).

Maybe I should bother a linux usergroup with that question.

I have a distro of linux, Knoppix 3.2 that came with PCWorld aus edition.
It booted OK then partway (severl mins)and then went into a scrolling type screen.
Hit the switch was the only way out.
PS
Win98SE, 128M RAM P2.
Very clean.
Is the CD stuffed?
Thanks and all that
l.

If you can get a command line, the first thing you should do is enter:

Knoppix testcd <CR>

This will check the md5sums of all the files on the LiveCD. I just did
this on my (third) burn of Knoppix_V3.3-2004-02-09-EN.ISO, and it told
me that only two of the 53 files failed. Since both were readme.txt
files, I'm not too worried.

If things still go haywire after that, try hitting "f2" for a list of
command line boot options. Then maybe try selecting a smaller Xwindow
manager, instead of the default KDE.

Knoppix is still unstable on my system. It loads consistently, and
without errors, but it doesn't save the desktop as it's supposed to
(at least not where I can see it), and it intermittently shuts itself
down without warning. Still, it's a relatively painless and effortless
way of trying Linux and a large selection of applications on a Windows
machine, compared to partitioning your hard drive and doing a regular
install. This is especially usefull if you don't have enough room to
install Linux on your hard drive.

Mandrakemove and mandrake 3 disk loaded OK on mine. I would suggest you try
them.

Can you tell me whether MandrakeMove includes boot.img and pcmcia.img
or pcmcia_add.img files?
