I wouldn't say that they make the site more visible to search engines. But
search engines do give consideration to the words in the <title> tag when
they determine what kind of relevant content is on your site.
So, if you have the words "barbecue sauce" in the <title> tag, search
engines will be more likely to rank the page well in searches for "barbecue
sauce". It's a good tactic to use, as long as the words in the title bar do
accurately reflect the page content.
