Personal firewalls aren't necessary, but circumstances can make them
highly desireable. For instance, a person may either not be a capable
administrator, or be stuck in the position where he or she is in charge
of a computer that others will be using. Basically, the PFW is desired
for exerting control over what is allowed to connect out. This would
probably only happen if you ran a trojan or some worm managed to
get through a legitimately opened port by exploit or tunnel.
Don't get me wrong, I'm making no assumptions about you. The fact
that you are asking these questions makes me think you are more
capable than the average user.
