I run the subject version of jv power tools on both WinXP HE and WinXP ProI'm running WinXP Pro with a 1.8Mhz Celeron, 512 mb ram and the last
freeware version of JV16 crashes constantly. I installed version 1,2
with the same results. Changed date as you had done, as well as some
others have and it still crashes after searching for a minute or so
through the registry. Anybody running WinXP Pro without any problem?
These are the examples why I switched to GPL licenced Software ->
Once free, free for ever.

They clearly built in an expiry to Version 1.3, so that it would stop
working as of 31 December, 2003.

A said:Shouldn't that be a fairly easy hack? (For hackers, that is.) Just
find the point where it checks the date, and change it from "if
current date >= Dec 31, 2003" to "if current date = Dec 31, 2003".
That way it will only not work on one day ever.
Then you enter the realm of cracks and warez. That's not what this
group is supposed to be about. Freeware is supposed to be software
that is legitimately free for your use.
I hope people have retained a copy that does not expire. Anyone have
one?

Point well taken, John. But wasn't this software originally released as
*freeware*, free for the user to use as long as one complied/abided by the
license?
Good point, but IMO it's still wrong to reverse engineer. Besides,
there are still older (non-timeout) versions of the program out there
for download, and there are other programs that work just as well.

Thanks,

BTW--Sorry I criticized you in the past.
