jv16 Power Tools 1.3 (the last freeware version) has expired on my machine
as of 1/1/2004. I get a message that I am using a very old version and need
to go www.jv16.org for a newer (shareware) version. Unless this is a
"feature" unique to my machine, Jouni Vuorio can bite me! ;-)

I have version 1.0.0.124 and it seems to be working fine.

He probably wasn't planning to go the shareware route at version 1 so he
didn't build an expiration date into it (assuming this behavior is not
unique to my PC).

I have jv16 Power Tools 1.3 (1.3.0.196)
and that one works nicely (1/1/04 - CET 10:31am)

Now I'm stumped. I think I'll download from a different source and try
again. Thanks!

Mine expired, too: version 1.3.0.196. I tried to run it at 5:00 AM ET and
got the message prompting me to go to the website to get a newer version.
Once you exit the message box, JV is terminated. I rebooted; same thing.
Looks like it's dead here.

I just installed the same version from my site and it too is expired
:(

Same here. This makes me think of 'time-expiring' freeware.
Fortunately, there are some software authors (eg. 40tude Dialog) that indicate clearly that some
of the versions of the software they develop has an expiration date ; unfortunately JV power tool's
author was not that transparent :/

I just checked RegCleaner 4.3 which I still have installed (but haven't
used in a while), and it is still functioning.

I pretty much save most versions of software I've downloaded, and I found
the JV16 v 1.0.0.124 setup file on my hard drive. I might have to install
that. But, I can probably get by with RegCleaner as that's the
functionality I used most in JV16.

Luckily RegSeeker is still free and is better in my opinion than JV.

Two thumbs up!!

I agree; I also use RegSeeker. But the one thing I really like(d) in JV16
(and RegCleaner by the same author) is the section of the program that
showed all installed software and kept track of them with the Old / New
tag. You could easily see what software / registry entries were added
recently at a glance. I can definitely live without though.

But of course, time-limited software cannot be freeware any more than
trialware can be.

It'll be interesting to know if he built an expiry into that one as
well; let us know if you do install it.

Have they fixed the current beta so that the Add/Remove reg file is no
longer necessary? That problem makes me really nervous about using
Regseeker.

I used the last beta and this one too. I got the patch just in case,
but it worked fine in both versions for me. I think the link is still
there is case it is required.

Hi Jordan,

happy new year and best wishes ....
what a surprise this morning: same problem here with jv16 Power Tools 1.3.0.196
at 13:30 (GMT+01).
Instead of RegCleaner I'll use RegSeeker (www.hoverdesk.net) now.

I'm running v1.3.0.188 on a W98se machine and it's still
working at the moment. Will have to see what happens.

Ah: thanks for that. (Perhaps he built in the expiry only for the
last-free-edition-before-charging.)

jv16 was good, and replacing it will be a bit botheresome; but I'm
sure we can find other freeware tools out there that will do the job.

Temporarily change the date on your OS and run it. Reset the date and all
is right and wonderful with the world!

Thanks for getting back to me. I'll check it out!
