I tried the ‘set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1’ but it doesn't do
anything? Are you sure this is it?

Ok I've done it!

But it didn't change anything.. It still got the letter I: and I could only
format it :S

Hi,

I just formatted my PC today and reinstalled Win XP Pro. I hooked up my ext.
hard drive and turned it on. It gave the 'remove hardware safely' thing, it
shows up as usb device for mass storage, but not in Disk Management. I'm
getting really frustrated since I put everything I wanted to save on this
thing.. (So formatting isn't an option) And the weird part is.. I also have a
drive of 250GB and that one worked like a charm :S

It's an LaCie Hard Drive, 1TB.

Please help me :S
Hello,
Suggest the use of Koppix boot disc.
It may allow you to see and possible transfer files.
This can be downloaded from:
http://www.knoppix.org/
With a drive Windows states needs formatting this may not work.
It is free and the only cost will be some of your time.
Need a cd/dvd drive with software that can handle creating a boot disc .iso
file.
Some free software: "FinalBurner" has free and pay, ISO-Burner and ImgBurn.

take care.
beamish.

Hi,

Listen formatting is still an option. Format it then assign it a drive and
get an application called recover my pc. It can recover the files even after
a hard disk format. There is about at least 90 % chance that this can work.

Its a good indication the data is still there, the file table may be
corrupt. Probably an easy fix for the most part for data recovery. May be
more difficult if your enclosure has 2 physical hard drives in a RAID
configuration.
