I'm new here. I'm used to newsgroups that get maybe 50-100 posts a day.
This group has had triple that number today. Is this what this group is
usually like?

If it is, I'm going to have to unsubscribe. I can't afford to spend the
time downloading the headers of floods of hundreds of posts a day just
to killfile them all so I can find the one or two real posts that might
be of interest to me...

Nope, it's not normally like this. On the rare occasions there is a
flooder or two, just killfile them. It's no big deal. Even if you don't
killfile them, they normally go away. They stick around only when people
complain about them :D.

Assuming your newsreader acts like Xnews, killfiling is a simple thing to
do. It takes less time than posting about them. :)

Yeah, I am familiar with this problem. The missing killfile capabilities of
Free Agent are a nuisance, that is why I got Hamster in the first place.

About all three to six weeks, there is a major thread with a lots of posts,
and then calmer times inbetween.

Not always, but it can be managed easily with filters, or quick scrolling.

Normally, most of us do select only the articles that we find interesting.

The "flooding" is quite likely the outgrowth of a phenomenon that appeared here not
long ago, in which posters are *recognised* for their volume "contributions", rather
than the quality of article content that they provide, sadly.

We could use an end to that practise, most certainly!

if you consider "flood" the good content of posters that contribute with
useful news, this is not a good idea ... if i mistaken, excuse me.
maybe some of these people make reviews of software and then post the whole
group of reviews in a day

Hi Onno,
since now you're using Dialog, the rules to filter this flood are

[alt.comp.freeware]
!markread From "Tramp" +"<[email protected]>"
!markread From "<[email protected]>"

For PT I left only the address because sometimes he's (ProteanThread), other
times *ProteanThread*. But he is consistent with his address, then there is
no need to make a complex rule with a regex.

HTH other Dialog users who (like me) have no time to crawl among hundreds of
posts like those.

It would seem you understand the situation completely.

Aw, you poor guy. I just downloaded the 200 some headers in about 5
seconds. I'm trying to figure out what the point is of this post. If you
don't like the newsgroup, then don't read it. You sound like a whiny little
crybaby.

Killfile the flooder du jour, and anything that has Babya in the subject.
You do understand what a killfile is, right?

Not using Free Agent he doesn't.

Have a look at NFilter

No that's not what's being talked about here. It's the people who post
vast amounts of unorganized information without any apparent rhyme or
reason. It's their right to do so, but the human mind can't deal with a
lot of unorganized information, which is why many, if not most, people
don't like the flooders, myself included.

But it's soooo easy to kill file them, I don't see why people complain
about them. *shrugs shoulders*

And it would seem that you too are an idiot and don't realize it.

Quoting "Albert Einstein" does that make you other than one?

Oh Gawd, get Xnews and press "K"

No, my superb intelligence and uncommon acumen make me other than one.
The quote is from a random sig generator which any non-idiot would
recognize. Notice the different quote below?
