Is there ANY game that will play?

Part of the necessary research someone should do while considering an
operating system upgrade is verify your essential hardware and software
works with the appropriate manufacturer.

I have also problems with all my games (Diablo II, Warcraft III, Diablo...)
which had no problems with other OS.
The research you mention should have been done by microsoft, not by the
users. If a software company cannot guarantee the compatibility of products
developed under their not so older products, then it should not sell it. No
to speak of beta versions...

WarCraft 3 works fine here.

You want Microsoft to research millions of applications that people have
written for Windows to find out if they're compatible with the latest
version?

Microsoft are a platform company, they make a platform for people to develop
on after they make it. Not the other way around. If Windows Vista were to
have complete 9x compatibility it would be Windows 9x.

Have you tried:
compatibility Mode?
Uninstalling and reinstalling the program?
Contacting manufacturer about Vista compatibility?
Etc?

"The research you mention should have been done by microsoft,"
That sounds good but it is not possible.
Do some quick research and see just how much software is available and from
how many venders.
What you consider recent, others may not.
Some consider their 4 year old software recent while many consider it
ancient.
Program manufacturers are responsible to make their programs compatible with
the operating system.

Microsoft is in the business of making the platform, Windows Vista in this
case.
Backwards compatibility as you suggest, assuming it is possible, probably
would have delayed the release of Vista considerably.
If they don't, and many decide for their customers not to, the program
remains unsupported.

However Beta testers used the Beta versions of Vista with a wide variety of
programs.
If problems were found, they were urged to bug it and Microsoft would
forward the appropriate information to the program manufacturer.
Testers were also urged to forward appropriate information directly to the
manufacturer for them to resolve.
Some manufacturers took the information and used it to resolve the issues
while others ignored their customers or are still moving slowly.

How have the manufacturers responded when you gave them details of your
issues of their products compatibility with Windows Vista?.

Thanks for your reply,

I tried almost everything, from downloading the compatibility tookit 5.0
(which I cannot use because windows won't confer me administrative rights,
not even if I am using an administrator account) to executing the
compatibility advisor and uninstalling the program.
What I really meant by saying that MS should have done a bit more research
is not that it should try to make all programs compatible with Vista.
Instead, Microsoft shouldn't have released Vista so soon. I know that most of
the problems are due to the premature state of all codecs and such stuff.
In my case, I do no have an internet connection at home (that's where I have
the computer with Vista installed on it). There is no other way for me to
solve problems than downloading stuff and burning it to CDs. This way I never
know whether or not a patch for a program has been created, e.g., windows
vista does not offer the possibility to download stuff on your own for fixing
problems, evething runs automatically, whereas in other OS there is no need
for doing that (downloading patches and that stuff). In this sense, Vista is
incomplete and not userfriendly.
I know nothing about programming, but when I do my job, I try doing it the
best I can do. I wouldn't bother my clients with uncomplete results.
Again I thank you for your reply.
