This is probably not even the right place for this-but, is there a site to ask REALLY basic questions about computing? Everything I read in these sites is pretty much beyond my realm. Is there a place I can ask for information w/o sounding like a moron?

Hi, Different web sites tailor to different subjects. A good place to start
learning is by reading some of the information in "Help and Support" That's
located in your Start Menu.

A few of the best links for general XP help are as follows...

Kelly's Korner

Doug Knox's Home Page
http://dougknox.com/

James Eshelman Windows Support Center

julie;
If there is such a site I have yet to find it, unless it is one of those
that always give the wrong answers purposely.
What I've found on these NGs is that you can ask pretty much any question ,
no matter how basic. Sure, there are some that hang out on these NGs that
are only here so they can flame newbies , but you will find they are few and
far between. Just ignore them , they won't go away but it bothers them more
to be ignored . All they want is for a newbie to flame them back ,so they
can display their self perceived superior intelligence. So just ask away and
don't be too quick to take the advice offered until you have looked at the
answers given by that individual on previous posts.
Naturally, I'll probably get flamed by someone for saying all this.

Well you shouldn't, it is very sound advice and true.
I tend to lurk more in here to find useful information about the OS and
only occassionely offer any replies. I don't know enough about the OS yet
or feel qualified to post answers.

Stick at it! Search the internet (using www.google.com) for more information
on stuff you see that you do not understand but are interested in.
If you want _really_ basic info, you might like to try here:
http://aalrc.org/cl/welcome.html, but the fact you made it here suggests you
might be above that. Also, from the Start bar, go to 'help and support' -
there's a wealth of information and help there - you can start at 'Windows
basics' or just search for whatever you need help with.
If you need to ask a question about Windows XP, ask it here - just try to
give as much information as you can, and make sure the subject is as
descriptive of your problem/question as can be. If you don't know the
relevant information that you might need to post to get your problem solved,
say so - and ask for help in how to find out. If someone calls you a moron,
or is otherwise (in your opinion) unpleasant, just ignore them - what they
say is not going to hurt you, and what you might learn from the other
replies is well worth it!

Don't be afraid to ask a question, no matter how basic you may think it is.
Many others are in the same boat, and will be grateful that the question was
asked. However, do a brief scan of the threads first. Often there will be
dozens of answers already there for your question. By the way, a good search
engine will get results too. I use Google. It is one of the best.

Each technical newsgroup specializes in something specific. This one, for
example, is intended for Window XP questions. There are lots of others as
well, such as an Outlook Express newsgroup, a Windows 98 newsgroup, an
Internet Explorer newsgroup, a newsgroup for storage devices, etc.. So try
to pick an appropriate newsgroup for your question, but if you happen to use
the wrong newsgroup, someone will probably direct you to the proper one.

Best of luck.

So are you smart then?
Really, what degree do you have?
Why not? (there are some acceptible answers to this, but 'educated and
smart' would mean that the wanker should know better than make such a post).
Do you have a fulfilling social life? Honestly?
If your answer to that question is 'yes', why bother to make that post?
Did it make you feel big? Did it make you feel intelligent?
If the answer is 'yes', you need to see a shrink. Actually helping people is
far more affirming.
I have news for you: I don't care how smart you think you are or what your
qualifications are - it took more guts for the OP to post the question than
you have, and more idea of real life than you have to reply in a sensible,
helpful manner. I doubt you agree, as you are obviously screwed up in some
way, but that doesn't matter... nor does what you say now, everyone watching
thinks you're the stupid one.

Thanks to all of you, minus Kurt, for taking the time to answer in language I actually could understand. While I'm sure this is hard for many to comprehend, I didn't grow up learning computing-have only recently joined the ranks and am learning slowly on my own.

Thanks for the defense-this reaffirms my "duh" capacity, though. What is an OP?

Remember the old adage.. "one who asks a question looks ignorant for one
moment, one who does not ask remains ignorant forever".

Hi, OP is Original Poster.

By the way, do not worry about the comments by the so-called "kurttrail".
This is just some lamer kind posting on the web through the communities page
using the name of another poster.

OP=original poster. You in this case, as you started the thread. And don't
worry about it, just ask your questions. You will pick up these things as
you follow the posts and answers here.

Hi Julie,

What questions have you got for us?
Im sure we (the helpful ones) will endeavor to help you in a way that you
can easily understand without losing you in technobabble.

Hi Julie,

This is a "windowsxp basics" news group. You can't get much more basic then
that. Ask any XP related question you wish. Someone will try to help. Just
ignore the "butts" when they post.

Welcome to the world of XP, JAX

What do you know about computer technology, Walt? I'm the MVP, not you, so go back to gardening or whatever it is you do

This would be another lamer (most likely the same one from above)

Okay, Mr. Self-Proclaimed Genius, if photons have no mass and exude no
gravity themselves, how can their path be bent by gravity from other super
dense objects? See, everyone is dumb in some area.

Okay, Mr. I'm Perfect, you were born potty trained? If you already knew how
to walk, climb, and use your fingers before you were born, they why did the
doctor have to yank you out? And since you had been lying around doing
nothing for 9 months, how come you didn't bring your thesis on the origin of
life with you?

Everyone has to start. Everyone is a newbie. And some folks, like you,
never do grow up - and peculiarly it is their deliberate choice.

I DO NOT do "gardening", Chris. I realize that you're more knowledgeable (with computers, anyway) than I, but I do make an attempt to offer assistance.

Walt

There are many of us who have benefitted from the generous sharing of knowledge on this site. We'd always be willing to help a 'newbie' cause we were one once. I have gotten lots of help and info from here and I always check all the forums to learn new things. Just read and post. I've got a whole list of troubleshooting sites to answer my questions just from all the recommendations here.
