Hi,

I haven't been able to get to pricelessware for over a week. I have no
problems getting to other sites - just pricelessware.org. I saw the
thread posted earlier in this group about someone else having problems
with getting there - the poster was from australia like me. Could it
just be certain areas that have trouble getting to this site?

Forgive me for asking the obvious: you *are* trying the correct URL,
yes?

http://www.pricelessware.org

I have had no probs connecting to it. (Very) North America, here.

No, he posted pricelessware.org (minus the www).

With or without the 'www' doesn't make any difference, though.
It's still technically the same URL and same location on the net.

I've actually had difficulty getting into certain sites *because* I
neglected to use the www. first. Not pricelessware.org (it works fine for
me) but there were a few sites that gave me difficulty without the www.
prefix.

Likewise, hence my suggestion to try the www. Sometimes that does the
trick for me.

Weird! Technically it shouldn't be any problem to omit the 'www'.

Could the problem be that some sites are (still) running *servers*
designated www? IOW, I believe you get to Google Groups via their
server designated groups.google.com, and using the www designation
probably parallels that (and was the practice when the Web was new), so
that if, for instance, I had blinkynet.net on a server that was actually
designated www.blinkynet.net, you'd need the www. I don't, so you
don't -- even though it does work.

It shouldn't, but it can - depends on the web provider's ability to set up
domain names specifications (DNS) properly.

Chris

given that you referred to my earlier post, I figure I should respond....

Not sure what provider your with, but I'm using BigPond and still having
trouble accessing that site. Most times I get a timeout, but I have been
able to access some pages using some of the other links posted here from
time to time...

and fwiw, I always type the full address, and i always use lower case....

Simon,

Yes, I'm with BigPond too. I use the full address
(http://www.pricelessware.org) & I still cannot get to it. I've only
just swapped over to BigPond from my previous ISP OzEmail. I never had
any troubles accessing it with them. I've emailed BigPond tech support
to ask them why you cannot access some sites with them. The closest I
can get to accessing the site at the moment is to do a google search
on pricelessware, then use google's cached page to get to the
pricelessware front page...but I can't get into the site cause google
doesn't cache any of the actual site pages - only the front page. It
would seem from the postings that the only people that can't access
the site are from Australia, & use BigPond as an ISP.

It's definitely *not* the same URL.
It *might* point to the same website, but that's not a given...

www is just a subdomain like any other subdomain, only it's traditionally
often used for webservers.

I had a very similar access problem recently and was provided
with this suggestion which fixed it for me, and others since.

Start|Run|winipcfg, select Release_all then Renew_all.
The renew takes a while sometimes. On some systems the
command is ipcfg. A 'bad' IP code is locked up and this
clears it out so you're system will look for a new IP.
May be due to your ISP swap. Mine came out of the blue.

Hope this works for you too,

BoB

No problem getting to [www.]pricelessware.org using Pacific Internet,
just so you know others from Oz can get there.

hmmm, yeah thanks for that....

it would appear that it's something that BigPond are doing (for our
benefit??)

It would seem so. There are a couple of other sites I like to go to
that react the same way when using BigPond. It's been 2 or 3 days
since I sent the email to their tech support, & no reply so far.
Typical Telstra really, so I'm not surprised. At least it's good to
know that others from oz not using BigPond can get there - I will
point that out to them when I can get onto their tech support. If I
hadn't only just signed up with them & if they didn't have that fee to
get out of the contract I would find another ISP.
