From what I've seen here, it is safe now, but it is much safer if you wait.
Some people report having no problems, some report actual bugs, and a lot
are just reporting drivers not available for their hardware.
It's all a matter of hardware and software. I've got lots of software
I use but nothing really significant outside of maybe Paint Shop Pro
XI (it works). And Microsoft Office (which I upgraded at the same time
as Windows - just the way Stevie Ballmer likes it).
Hardware? It's pretty obvious. If you meet the recommended
requirements then you're good to go HOWEVER....
You have to be sure you have the necessary driver support.
I've got NO support for my IEEE 1394b card and up till a few weeks
ago, I had no support for my TV tuner card.
And strangely, I had to install BETA drivers from Creative in order to
get sound out of my SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS.
The drivers for both my printers were provided with Vista, however the
extra software that HP and Brother added on top of them isn't
Vista-compatible (yet).
I knew all this BEFORE I upgraded. That's the key.
But many here post having "show-stopping" problems, so obviously they
shound't have upgraded to begin with.
Research is your friend.
