Just buy someone's old computer!

Any processor over 166mh ( heck, an old AT might work fine) and 32 meg with
a modem & sound will do fine for your parents to start on.

You can get a whole system (15 inch monitor included, fine for those not
spoiled by a larger one!) for free in some cases & for way less then $125 if
you are patient and look carefully.

I have a friend that has sold dozens of these "old" computers to low income
or folks that don't want to spend a lot to surf, and they are all very happy
with the results!

We upgrade her PC to reduce boot and program startup time any other
programs just wasted hd space.
On the other hand my father could stay on his pc
almost day and night doing graphics .... internet.

My specs, but looking to add autoCAD.
Suggestions?
Linux is a stable internet system past the gui learning phase.
So what I said was why build a PC when
you can purchase a system that meets your requirements
Expandable without being trapped by engineered obsolescence?
and has a warranty
(now here's a real waste of time and money.)
whether you want to spend a little or spend a lot? little is always better.
You can build your PC but the time and cost of hardware and software
Software licensing is legalized theft, So for me, it's free.
won't make it cheaper than buying a system,
Wrong, in many ways, on most days.
Especially if your parents intend on
putting the vacation videos on DVDs and adding a soundtrack.
Can you match what your parents need to the PC?

Why not?
Although, not for me, till DVD media
comes down to the tape/CD price range.

Software licensing is legalized theft, So for me, it's free.

This could be a very rash and poorly worded stand on GPL and 'Free'
software, (rather than the selfjustification for software theft, that
it looks like) so I reserve judgement and harsh language.

Intellectual property is also property! Software authors don't owe you
anything. I'm a big fan of the monetary market system that recognizes
property and protects peoples rights to their property. Anybody is
fully entitled to decide exactly what he/she is prepared to sell on a
market, and at what price. In the case of most software licenses,
what's offered for sale is the right to use the software. The buyer
can accept it or take his business elsewhere.

So someone is prepared to give that use away for free. That doesn't
mean others are under obligation to give their property away. Nor does
it give you any right to call it "theft" when they still demand your
money for their labour.

I agree. However, I'll be damned if I'm gonna shell out $200 USD for a
Microsoft product, ever again. I pay for what I feel is an honest offering.

Exactly! There's some good software deals out there. Bring some
business and revenue to those that try to compete. (rather than just
"pirace" MS office, AutoCad whatever).

An oxymoron. (A Brit will recognize this as no insult.)
- Engineered obsolescence?
Please don't continue here.
Just point me to an appropriate place to argue my views.

computer, and an iMac is one, thats all ready to go, no messing around
