For a stright out of the box and on to the web in 15 minutes, you cant
go far wrong with a Mac.

PC? HOMEBUILT?
True, but the kid wants to give his folks an internet configured
computer, and an iMac is one, thats all ready to go, no messing around
building the dam thing.

Macs are overpriced. Besides, it's not like it's hard to configure a PC for
the Internet.

This is my current "old folks" Newegg model. Easily overclocks to XP2000+ (raise FSB to 143 or so). The PSU blows hard enuf so it doesn't need any more fans, so it's quiet. Add a 17" Samtron Dyna-Flat CRT Monitor for $119.76 from Sam's Club and you're done. TOTAL $446 +40shipping&taxes.

If they don't want broadband (they may not really need it, being older) get call waiting for the v.92 modem so they don't miss calls. Don't let them pay more than $10/m for a dialup ISP. The best are www.localnet.com at $10/m and www.ivwnet.com at $99/yr

If they're thinking of cable broadband get it thru Earthlink and save some money. They also give you a free unlimited dialup account (use it yourself, hehe).

You can save money by buying memory, HDD, CD-RW and modem locally with rebates www.salescircular.com & www.techbargains.com

Fry's sells a Thinz Linux PC with CD-RW for $199, eMachine XP2400 with CDRW
and XP Home from $400, add a 17in monitor for $80. Any Celeron or XP combo
for under $100 should be enough for surfing and email.

The points are:
1) You can spend $$$ making a surfing machine or get good average machine
with software and warranty for the internet.
2) Linux flavored PCs are excellent internet machines for the money,
Mozilla stops pop-ups without add-ons, Pan with Yenc decoder and attachment
saver is a very great newsreader despite the poor filter mechanisms,
Evolution is as good email handler and Linux is less susceptible to virus
attacks than Windows.

seems that the common thread here is a "low cost" computer. I suppose I could
get one at Best Buy.

anyone familiar with Alienware machines?

They are expensive gaming machines. Overkill for an internet PC.

I built one using an asus nforce 1 with on board video, sound etc. Used an
XP1700+ Tbred and it works great for very small $$$. Also used linux as XP
is about half the cost of a cheap PC. You might check local computer shops,
sometime the ones around here will have a batch of P3's they sell for
$100-$150 a pop.

Most old folks also appreciate a monitor. 17" at Officemax usually for
about $90 after rebate. 19" for about $140 sometimes.

Macs are overpriced.

The word is competitively priced.
Besides, it's not like it's hard to configure a PC for
the Internet.

True, but you have to set the PC up from all its bits first.

To rebate or not rebate, that is the question. Whether it is nobler in the
mind to fill out multiple forms and copy UPC codes in the hope of receiving
that check 2 months later.

If it's for yourself, go with the rebates. If it for a customer, just find
them a low price and be done with it, I say.

Too bad they're black. Most folks want stuff to match. Low end usually means
beige.

Asus P4P800-VM is an integrated P4 Motherboard with Intel Extreme Graphics,
Integrated Ethernet, 800 Mhz Bus Processor Bus, Integrated Sound. Micro ATX
Motherboard. Will fit in a smaller case and still pack a purnch when it
comes to processing power. Has an 8x AGP Port for later use. Throw in a
800 Mhz 2.4 - 3.0 processor and it should run stable and powerful for years
to come.

Dont really need that much Power to just check your email, but you dont want
something that will be out of date before you buy it. Could try something
small like a Crystal mini P4 or a Shuttle bare bones kit in their cute
little cases or possibly a Via Mini-ITX motherboard or a small Tyan Flex ATX
P4 Motherboard.

Come on for net surfing? This application is the last place I'd recomend a
P4 especially a 3.0/800. They could use a P3 450 and never notice the
difference!

30-something

No such age as 30 something, what is the something, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
7, 8, 9?
