Instant Messaging Software

No pissing match (nor was it an "uncalled for attack"... what a
joke) if you are referring in part or in whole to me;

intended. My apologies.

Is there any freeware instant messaging software compatable with AOL &
others?

I fully understand when you are locked on to a certain IM service, because
it happened to me. If you are not irretrievably locked onto AOL yet, give
BitWise a try. It's very small, fast, and unobtrusive, and is the
"Anti-MS/AOL/Yahoo".

I consider the 3 amigos to be the IM equivalent to Freeware that is
nagware, spyware, bloatware, and gotchaware. The BitWise license agreement
is totally clean. ;)

I can't believe what I started! All I ever wanted to do was say hello to my
brother if I saw him online.

What does everything think of Bitwise? It supposedly uses "64-bit Blowfish
encryption," but how do we KNOW it's encrypted? Can the company decipher
messages?

I almost hesitate to jump back into this one, but I feel compelled to say
"no apologies necessary".

Thanks.

I feel I'm an integral part of "what you started". :)

Sorry. I was trying to be helpful, but apparently I presented an overly
rigid viewpoint, which was not my intention. :)

In an attempt to be useful, maybe a listing of IM clients and their
interoperability with various networks might be helpful to you and others.
I believe I have posted the link before; it was useful to me when I was
downloading and testing clients trying to decide which one was right for
me.

Before you start trusting you should see this:

FBI adds to wiretap wish list | CNET News.com

"Legal experts said the 85-page filing includes language that could be
interpreted as forcing companies to build back doors into everything
from instant messaging and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) programs
to Microsoft's Xbox Live game service. The introduction of new services
that did not support a back door for police would be outlawed, and
companies would be given 15 months to make sure that existing services
comply."

Thanks for your help. It will be used primarily with AOL. Does anyone have
any AOL experiences they can share?
I use Miranda at works for AIM. I only send IMs - no file transfers or
anything. Works great and uses SOOO little resources. ALl I had to
download was Miranda (and maybe the AIM plugin?). I alos downloaded the
ncors (spelling?) plugin for much nicer hostories. Other than that, I
pretty much use it as is and it works great. YMMV
