Windows Scripting Host 5.6 v5.6.0.8515 with dispex.dll 5.6.0.6626 bug fix
- released 6-9-2003 - see explanation at
http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2003/2003-06-23.htm#2
QUOTE

The number 5.6.0.8515 is the version number of the DLL file "dispex.dll", a file installed by the latest Windows 98/ME build of the
Windows Script Host 5.6 (released 4/23/2003). This file causes the "RPC Stub" error message described above. Another side effect of
having this file is not being able to complete downloads from the Microsoft Windows Update site. The downloads usually freeze at
zero progress.

As yet, there is no official acknowledgment from Microsoft as to the "bugginess" of this file, and thus no official fix. At least
none that I know of. However, several of the Microsoft MVPs have posted a fix in various newsgroups. I've tried the fix, and it
worked for me.

The fix is simple replace version 5.6.0.8515 of "dispex.dll" with the previous version that was included with IE6. The version
number of this previous file is 5.6.0.6626, and the file can be extracted from the IE6 CAB file "SCR56EN.CAB".

Thanks bluemoon for pointinting this MS bug out.
(I'm still using an older version so I wasn't aware of it)

Currently running:

Win98se

IE5.5sp2. Appears to be the consensus most preferred/stable IE version
for Win98se, & that is my experience.

Do you remember sources for this conclusion? I hope it wasn't
microsoft.
IE6 destabilized my system, but
thanks for the info at www.frankprovo.com - I may try out the fix
suggested...would be nice if it actually works out.
[snip]

Why? So you can get the newest forms of security vulnerabilities? I'd
rather use security vulnerabilities no one else is currently trying to
rape. Also, there are very few feature improvements that I use between
5.01 and 6.0. I can only name one: print preview... I don't remember
the last time I used it.

I seem to recall that IE5.5 & (IE6) are both much quicker at rendering pages.
I'm currently using 6 (I do, on occasion get probs after moving /deleting file(s)
it doesn't always take a large or multiple files to trigger this problem on my
system although that is more common) As a browser I find IE6 much
more stable than previous versions, although that is obviously outweighed
by any OS issues it might cause!!!

Many of the 'new' security issues in current versions will also apply to earlier
versions, although there is often a work around (such as disabling activex or
a tweak to the registry)

The main disadvantage I recall from upgrading from IE5.0 was that folders
wont automatically reopen after a re-boot.

I plan to put in only IE5.01 into win98 because of this issue:

Whatever the flaws, IE5.01 was made more for win98, while for later
versions it is an afterthought.

*THAT* can be fixed in the registry. For example, did you know that
IE6 still contains the Radio Bar but it's hidden ?

I really didn't wish or intend to revive/engage in this age old debate,
but let me just state the following & let that be the end of it, with all
due respect.

As I originally mentioned, it has been my personal practical experience
that, all aspects considered, Win9x is the best when paired with 5.5sp2
(note: this opinion devoid of any alternative browser consideration).

My conclusions were confirmed a couple of years after IE6 was released. I
surmised perhaps sufficient time had elapsed for the commonly acknowledged
incompatibilities with Win9x to be resolved.

I investigated the issue in several forums & NGs, with 5.5sp2 still
emerging as the clear preference, stability being the focal point.

As for differences between the two, there are several items/goodies in IE6
I would like to have, but certainly not worth the price of irregularity.

My pleasure.

Just to alleviate any possible confusion for others, the current WSH 5.6
version being offerred at MS

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...F6-249C-4A72-BFCF-FC6AF26DC390&displaylang=en

now includes the bug fix.
