SpeedGuide TCP Optimizer:

"Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free Windows program designed to
help optimize your Internet connection. Just download and run, no
installation required. The program makes it easy to find the best MaxMTU
value, test latency and tweak all the important broadband related
registry parameters. The Optimizer can be helpful with tuning any
Internet connection type, from dialup to Gigabit+ :) If you need help
with the program, read our broadband tweaking articles, the Optimizer
FAQ, and/or visit our Forums. As an alternative, you can try one of our
generic Registry patches instead. "

Also very good information of tweaking your connection. Very good info!!

I tried this, it errored when I hit apply, then crashed on exit, then caused windows to
hard crash needing a power down. But the speed test went from 762 before to 879 after.
So I guess it worked..

BTW I didn't use their recommended speed site, I used my own ISP's recommended site...
Not that I don't trust them of course :)

Hello Kanda:

I have never had it crash??? You may want to send a small e-mail to the
site so as to allow them to help you with your problem. The program has
worked an every system I have used it on?

You can also apply the tweaks manually from reading the page but of
course it is easier using the program.

No problem... Like I said, it worked - I didn't see the advertised 30%, but I saw more
of an improvement than I expected..

No problems, I probably won't need to use it again will I? Until I reinstall anyway.

I didn't read what program you tried. I thought you where talking about
the program that I suggested. I tried the one you tried and you are
correct, it crashes all the time.

Try the program from SpeedGuide. TCP Optimizer .

This one works. Never had a problem with it.

Yea, that's the one I tried! That's the one you said you liked best...

BTW: I just tried 2 other speed sites, 1 site - Cnet I think it was, clocked my broadband
at 1476.52 - Just slightly lower than T1 - WooHooo!!

It impressed the hell out of my GF - she thinks I'm a super genius now.. Hey who am I
to pop her bubble....

I think they were a little closer to the backbone than some of the other speed sites I
tried...

All in all, I'd say that TCP Optimizer did a pretty good job despite crashing !

Though I would like to know what it actually did... The settings are a little cryptic,
and while it mentions something about making settings manually, it gives absolutely no
info on what or how...

I've also installed a bandwidth meter - I forget which one now, and it confirms also that
my speed in certain circumstances -has practically doubled.. SO I guess I got a bit MORE
than the 30% advertised! at some sites, almost a 96% increase.

So again, thanks for the tip!!

Download DR TCP/IP from the following site:

http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.zip
http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe

Both of these files are exactly the same, one is zipped. No install. Just
run and it will show you your current values of your connection settings.

You will have to look up each setting from the SpeedGuide site to know
what they mean.

Also use the site that John Corliss mentioned to see your settings as
well. http://www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php

You will have to read a little to understand what and why you are
adjusting these values. In the long run, the info will pay off. [ Be
more of a super genius. LOL ]

Later

Wayne D

BTW: You may also make adjustments to your settings with DR TCP/IP.
They are all manual, no auto configs for different connections. So you
could start the TCP Optimizer, look at the values and put them into DR
TCP/IP and hit apply since TCP Optimizer is crashing on you? You have to
restart your computer before the new settings take effect. You could
also look at the web site and try different settings and see what results
you achieve.

Let me know how that goes.

Don't know if you noticed this page which does an online analysis of
your connection bandwidth:

http://www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php

It might help you understand manually settings a little better.

I understand the settings and what they are just fine...

The program itself tells NOTHING about what it actually did. If it actually did
anything... All it says is stuff like: Optimize your MTU -- It doesn't
actually tell you what it's going to set it to, it doesn't tell you what it's already set
at, it doesn't tell you anything... That's what I was commenting on...

But that page you noted was very helpful - thank you!!

It confirmed that my settings were set optimally as recommended by my ISP... And
since I actually saw an improvement in performance, I must not have been optimized...

That page suggested that I change my rwin:

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 8760
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 8760

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 350.4 kbps (43.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 140.16 kbps (17.52 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

However, my ISP throttles my upstream at 256 k and downstream at 1.5 m so changing the
settings as suggested probably would adversely effect my overall bandwidth.... Increasing
it would probably result in higher packet loss ratio and actually slow my download speed.

To me the program would actually be useful if it had a table or drop down lists, or
even input boxes so I could twiddle with the settings and see if my ISP's recommended
settings could be improved upon.. As far as I can see, all the program does is make sure
your settings match standard ethernet defaults. Which is good, since I just did a fresh
clean install, and obviously Win98se didn't use the standard ethernet defaults!

Aha! now that sounds very useful! Being able to fiddle around with the settings...

My ISP has a nifty eye catching warning page about playing around with these
settings... And I can see their point - If I was in the middle of a crowded neighborhood,
sharing the cable bandwidth with a hundred other people. But I'm way off on the edge of
town, and the cable guy remarked that I was sharing the cable with only 1 other person...

It was a very chilly slushy day when he did my install, so I had plenty of Stephen's
hot cocoa and fresh giant hot gooey caramel cinna-buns waiting for him inside... He was
an older long haired hippy (mid forties - my age) so I fired up the pink floyd on winamp
told him it was a smoking zone, invited him to warm up and get comfortable. We chatted
for about an hour - refilled his mug twice!

I was booked for the drop-it-at-the-door-with-an-instruction-book type FREE install, but
he waved me away and plopped down in my overstuffed comfy chair in front of the computer
and banged away at the keyboard and did the full ($50) install for me - gratis...

Let me know how that goes.

Wayne D

I LOVE tweaking!!

Will do Wayne! Thanx!

That's not true??? The TCP/IP Optimizer program that I would like you to

Okay... Test results:

The program ran just fine - I backed up my original configuration which appeared in the
program listed as "Default",

Clicked on the optimal settings, hit apply, it changed my rwin to 256960,
rebooted to a BSOD - complaining about msvtcp, rebooted a couple of more times, each with
a different complaint, on the third reboot - when it got to "starting win98" - it
spontaneously rebooted again (back to post) then came up normally...

Went to the analyzer page - refreshed, it showed my rwin as (maxint) 65535 - the note
there says to try installing the 236926usa8.exe win98 patch, I tried that - backed up my
original vtcp.386 as instructed - ran the patch - rebooted to BSOD's complaining about
Vtcp and various vmm errors .. Could not boot into windows at all... Eventually booted
into safe mode, restored my original vtcp.386 and windows booted normally...

I'll try this new setting for Rwin for a couple of days and see if it actually makes any
difference....

In Win98, there's not much to be changed for broadband. Two settings:

1. "DefaultRcvWindow" set to 32768 (or higher), which can be found under
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Current ControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP"

2. "MTU", set to 1500

That's enough BSOD. Sounds like you are missing one or two Win 98
updates.

I have updated the RWIN above 65535 and have never seen a BSOD on Win 98.
Then again, the computers I work are maintain by myself so I know all
updates are applied.

Go to this page.

http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/updates/

Here is a list of updates for Win 98 to XP. Check the updates with
respect to network updates.

Do you have an image software program? You should back up your Windows
partition before you start updating. You never know what to expect [ As
you found out with "vtcp.386" in which I do have applied.

Sounds like you know what you are doing. If you need any advice, just
ask.

I can always e-mail you if you wish to take this off the newsgroup.

Let me know.
