Hi !
You can do vectorial drawing with Open Office
www.openoffice.org
But it depends on the complexity of the job you have to do...

Merci Hervé.
I've already tried the drawing module of OpenOffice.org but it's not as
complete as illustrator is, i've also tried sodipodi, but it's not worth.
Do you have any other idea ?

I don't know whether or not it's compatible with Illustrator files as such,
but take a look at Inkscape:

"Inkscape is an open source SVG editor with capabilities similar to
Illustrator, CorelDraw, Visio, etc. Supported SVG features include basic
shapes, paths, text, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, node editing,
svg-to-png export, grouping, and more."

Got a direct link to the download???

I suspect not.

And let me add, I have read that this software will call home and will
provide you with periodic ads.

Let me add that I have personally USED this software (rather than reading
about it) as well as their photo editor PhotoPlus. While it IS
registerware, my version does NOT phone home, though even if current
versions do, a free firewall like Sygate or Kerio will take care of it if
you have a permanent connection, and not allowing the software to dial out
will do for modem users. Anymore, MOST software tries this little trick,
since it is so easy to circumvent, it is hardly a deal breaker in my mind.

They did send me emails about 4 - 6 times a year with upgrade offers. But I
opted out of the email program and haven't seen one since. Though in my
mind, the quality and completeness of this software makes that a small price
to pay for a quality graphics package.

Is it the equal of CorelDraw? Absolutely not. CorelDraw is still the big
dog of Vector graphics packages. IMO, Illustrator is awful. But Serif
maintains an active support forum that users of the FREE versions are
welcome to use This forum is at least as active and complete as the ones
Corel and Adobe maintain. The participants, mostly British and some
Americans, are friendly and helpful. It's the only free package I know of
that has a large, active, and knowledgeable community of users and
developers standing behind it. If you have problems, you CAN get real help.

Since you are such an expert Atomhrt, why don't you download this product,
test it, and write a review of this product? That would be better than
passing on dubious third hand info.

Look, you got an earful from Susan back in April that you did not
respond to, so back off!

You want my review?

I began by trying to get a trial of their Version 7 product, but noooo.
They don't even offer a trial version of their product. I should have
smelled a rat right then and there. No forums that I could see either.

Before I has read the April info, I had gone to the site (your link) and
it was a bad experience. First it's asks you for your first name and
email, ok I have no problem with that. Then on the next screen it's asks
you for all kinds of personal information. Then they tell you they have
to send you a key. The entire time, they lead you to believe that
there's one more click to download. What bullshit! Then the download did
not happen, I had to kill firefox, and here we go again. I was pissed
off to high-heaven and then did my research about Serif. They suck!

Euhm, it's mainly sodipodi with another user interface, but the same
features and possibilities. ;-)

BTW: I prefer Inkscape's UI over Sodipodi's too...

snipped some

I've used Serif's Photoplus 5.5 (last freeware version) for about a year.
Didn't call home, didn't email me once. Great product. Don't know why
there's such a thing going on against Serif. Not the only program that
needed some kind of registration discussed here. (eg AVG)

Hi Jan,

Just curious. How do you save a svg-file to an other vector fileformat
(f.i. wmf). I use Sodipodi. Copy and paste also doesn't work properly.

Thanks.

With kind regards,

Assuming the "save as" option doesn't allow it, is there an option to
"export" under the file menu perhaps?

The SAVE AS option can save as EPS, PS, InkScape SVP and Plain SVG
Also has Export to Bitmap

In the Sodipodi that I have on my computer, and according to the site
it is the latest version, the export command gives me only a PNG
export, and the Save As option gives me only a SVG option.

I'm wondering, are there any freeware applications that can save a SVG
file in an other vector format (WMF. CDR, CMX)? Didn't find anything
usuable through Google.

With kind regards,

Maybe that's one of the other differences between sodipodi & inkscape... ;-)
