IE6 Temp Internet files delete issue

I have a concern with the Administrator aspect of Temporary Internet Files as
they relate to IE6. Using Windows Explorer, I see that I have 3 paths that
contain the "temporary internet files" folder on my computer and I am the
only user. They are as follows:
1. Administrator
2. Administrator.ROBERTSHARON
3. Owner

However, in the Owner path to Local Settings, Temporary Internet Files
folder displays all cookies.
In the Administrator path to Local Settings, Temporary Internet Files folder
displays nothing.
In the Administrator.ROBERTSHARON path to Local Settings, Temporary Internet
Files folder now displays the "Content IE5" folder within which is the
"index.dat" file.

Which of these are accessed by Internet Explorer when attempting to delete
TIFs? I assume it is the Administrator.ROBERTSHARON path.

All attempts to delete TIFs from within Internet Explorer are futile.

This time, after starting again in Safe Mode, through Windows Explorer with
"view hidden and system files", I tried deleting the Temporary Internet Files
folder and it was successful for the administrator user! However, after
restarting and looking through Windows Explorer at this user (myself), there
is no Temporary Internet Files folder displayed for hidden or system files.
I thought it would be recreated after restart.

So after a subsequent opening of Internet Explorer 6, I browsed to 3
websites and tried deleting TIFs again but still get the Error: Internet
Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close.

Also, I have not been able to identify aother program that may be causing
this problem yet.

Please advise.

Hi,
It's possible that another program is causing this problem.

See if you can delete the Temporary Internet Files after starting up in Safe
Mode.
315222 - A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=315222

You could try closing other programs through task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del.)
See if you can determine which is causing the problem.

Or you may have a corrupted TIF folder.
Try deleting the Temporary Internet Files folder for the affected user
account. A new folder will be created on restart. Login as another user with
administrator privileges, or from the machine's default administrator
account (startup in safe mode.) Make sure that you can see hidden and system
files (Folder Options> View) Then delete the affected TIF folder from
Windows Explorer. It will be at [C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files] Restart.

Also, it's often recommended that the TIF folder size be set to between
50-100 MB.

Hope this helps,
Don

I cannot delete Temporary Internet files within IE6 now. After clicking on
Tools\Internet Options\Delete Files (Temporary Internet files), I get an
error message:
Error: Internet Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close.

After looking at "Windows Task Manager" I found IE not responding. So I
click on "End Task" and it shuts down IE. This happens every time I try
deleting Temporory Internet files now.

I am running Windows XP SP2 on an HP desktop. I also use MSN Explorer with
my Qwest ISP and have the same problem there.

Any suggestions?

Use the Settings dialog and find out.
Use the View files button to make it capturable
from an Explorer window's Address bar.
Keystrokes: Alt-T,O,Alt-S,V

I assume it is the Administrator.ROBERTSHARON path.

Then don't do it "from within Internet Explorer"! ; )
The same dialog is available while iexplore.exe is not running
by using the Internet Options applet in the Control Panel
or by Run... (e.g. press Win-R) and entering:

control inetcpl.cpl

However, usually IE doesn't interfere with these procedures.
So it's more likely that you have some other app running
which is causing such interference. You could find out
exactly which ones are using the TIF using Process Explorer
by searching for processes which have handles open
for Content.IE5\index.dat (for example.)

Good luck

I have resolved the problem!! I ran the "Process Explorer" program and found
these Processes: svchost.exe, explorer.exe, tgcmd.exe, and msnmsgr.exe
accessing the temporary internet files under Owner\Local Settings\temporary
internet files\Content.IE5\index.dat. So I assumed the tgcmd.exe process was
the third party program affecting the issue. It is my internet provider DSL
program for monitoring and fixing problems called Qwest Quickcare. I then
deleted the program and restarted the computer, followed by deleting
temporary internet files within Internet Explorer without any resulting
error.

Thank you for your assistance. I would not have guessed this program to be
the cause of the issue.

Take care.

Well done. Thank you for sharing your resolution.

I have once again run into the same problem with trying to delete TIFs in
IE6. I previously thought it was resolved after uninstalling the Qwest DSL
QuickCare program and successfully deleted TIFs.

I am running Windows XP SP2 and switched to DSL with MSN Premium in July,
2006. So I now usually run MSN Explorer with MSN email. However, I usually
do not encounter the same problem with deleting TIFs in "MSN Explorer". It
has occurred a couple of times but now works ok again in MSN Explorer.

Any ideas?
