Hi Peter :-)

My apologies for the OT, I didn't know you were waiting for us. :-))

In view of the information you have provided below, I don't have more to add
than what LuckyStrike has stated. Like LuckyStrike, I would recommend that
you hold off on for a while yet on the upgrade to the SP2. There are
still
a
number of things that can cause serious system problems.

However, should you choose to upgrade, here is some information you might
wish to review prior to doing so, which might help you avoid some of the
pitfalls of the process, and afford more positive results. I strongly
suggest that you read all the information and follow the instructions
carefully.

If you have installed any software that modifies standard system components,
eg to give a different boot screen, or even custom theme, uninstall it
before installing either service pack.

Also, SP2 includes all the items in SP1, and may further update some of
them. It is not necessary to install SP1 before getting SP2; nor to
iuninstall it or any other Microsoft Windows Updates.

sorry to barge in. would lucky strike and jan like to help
me with the following problem of IE6 'not responding'.
i've licked every problem i had with dos 5 & 6, win 3.1,
3.11 for workgroups, 95 and 98. but this one with xp is
just like having to play andy roddick on his service game!

this is what i had posted under the subject heading 'A
Clue to IE Not Responding':

I just noticed something that might give you a clue as to
what is causing the hourglass syndrome in IE6.
The 'freezing' is NOT one that is absolutely fatal. After
about three minutes, IE resurrects itself and starts
responding normally. I had previously been too quick to
end the process by way of task manager, thinking it was an
irrecoverable error.) Now, I always keep task manager in
the foreground. Whenever the hourglass syndrome appears
and IE freezes momentarily, task manager shows TWO
identical application tasks that are 'not responding'. For
example, if one instance of IE is frozen whilst attempting
to connect to www.google.com, task manager will show TWO
identical application tasks attempting to connect to
www.google.com and both are 'not responding'.
Subsequently, when IE comes to itself and
does successfully connect to google, task manager will
automatically show only ONE application task connecting to
www.google.com that is 'running'. Is this a clue to the
problem? thanks.

[running IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633IC with
Q818506, Q823353 and Q871260. urlmon, wininet,
mshtml=1459. browseui=1577. most of the other dlls=1106]
(latest versions of cwshredder,
adaware and spybot, in that order, gave a clean bill of
health.]

Another thing: i set up a separate pc on 98SE and used
windows update to install all available fixes just like i
did with the XP pc. everything, all programs, similar to
the dot. IE 6 NEVER EVER froze even once. ceteris paribus,
the problem is IE6 on XP. would xp_sp2 solve the problem?

Thank you! I just thought it best to let folks know up front what to expect
and how to do it properly for the best results. Hopefully, it will help them
avoid some of the install problems.
