Can someone advise me whether the printer stops if it runs out of ink half
way (or any other fraction) through a printing job or does it continue
without the relevant colour?

regards

If it has BCI3e carts like i550 and i850 (i think it does), then it can
finish current print job without problems. When this warning appears, sponge
is still full of ink, just front container is empty. This info is monitored
optically - when container runs out of ink, a warning appears. There's no
speculation and counting drops as in other printers.

I think there is a low ink warning and an out of
ink warning. When you get the out if ink it means
what was left in the sponge is almost gone. I
refill and never get to the out of ink warning,
but I sure wouldn't chance burning up the print
head by running completely out.

Interesting...

I just asked that same question earlier, and was told there is NO out-of-ink
warning, only the low ink warning :)

True from my knowledge. Canon in manual say only that you get a low ink
warning and (as i said above) when you do get it, you can safely finish your
current printe and afer that replace the cart immediately. There are only 2
states in print window - either full colored image, or empty with
exclamation mark above empty cart.

There's an out-of-ink message, but it isn't a warning - it's an
instruction to change the cartridge NOW!

I wouldn't swear that it's always the case, but I've only ever had the
the out-of-ink message between pages, and I've never seen the 950 run
out in mid-page. I never change the ink tank until the out-of-ink
message comes up.

There is both a low ink warning (caution sign) and an empty cartridge
warning (stop sign).

I just looked at my i950 manual. A (!) is a low
ink warning meaning the tank should be replaced
soon. There is ink still in the sponge but not in
the tank. (X) means out of ink,"replace tank
immediately." I wait until I get the low ink
warning and then refill. Trying to refill before
the warning will not reset the ink status to show
it is full.

That doesn't matter - the printer only see the true levels status when
it detects the low level.
It'll carry on wthout re-estimating the levels until that point.

Actually, my i950 shows staged ink depletion in the print window. I'm
pretty sure it's estimated until the prisim actually fires the low ink
warning.

I wonder how can see true levels, if it has only optical system at the
bottom of the cart...
Strange, Larry says it has staged ink depletion - i wonder, how printer
knows this...

It guesses based on usage. If you change a cartridge early, it doesn't
always reset the levels, but still doesn't report low ink until it
really is.

This is true. If filled before the low ink warning
it will not show full but will show low ink
warning when it gets to that point. It really
doesn't know how much is left between full and the
out of ink warning.

Aha...so, there must be different in 950 and in 550, since my printer
doesn't show this level dropping and i already refilled once before low ink
warning and still shows full. Oh, well...

It is ESTIMATED until the prism fires, then the display updates and the low
ink warnings appear.

It's accurate enough for me.

-Larry

Exactly. If the low-ink doesn't trigger, it has no way of knowing you
replaced the cartridge.

agreed. no need for precise showing

Anything else would require so-called "Smart Chips", and I can certainly do
without those things.
