$300 for XP Pro??? Who ever paid that much? I've seen it in Best Buy
here at $225 at the highest point and I paid only $89 for it in OEM
version from Tiger Direct a year and a half ago as a bundled deal
with a hard drive. $300??

Also in this tread and on several web sites it's been reported as
being priced at $399. That's a lot less.... but I do agree that this
is still TO MUCH!! That price make piracy very tempting. Paying $89
for an OS is no big deal but when it reaches the price of a low end
desktop or laptop computer I have to draw the line. Maybe I will
finally make the jump to Linux this time around.

Skon

Hi skon.

XP Prof retailed for $299. The price at the link below is pretty close.

Huh? Are you saying that the only good ideas arise due to profit? If so,
you must live a sheltered life and surround yourself with assh*les.

The GNU Public License forces you to THEIR terms if you should use their
software in development. Once done, you have to play by thier rules which
defacto precludes profit. It also forces you to share your ideas, some which
you may not want to share for any number of reasons. It's a sort of tryanny
of openness , a forced lack of privacy which, indeed could kill ideas.

I have no interest in software development. My business has nothing to
do with technology other than I use a computer to run it. Fire Fox, to
me, is proof that profit isn't necessary to design a good, free product.
Saving the outrageous price of Vista on three computer is good for *my*
profit.

I am sure MS has spent a fair amount of money to learn who steals software
and why they do it. I don't think keeping people from stealing Vista is going
to improve MS's bottom line as very few of those who steal will buy when they
can't. They will do without. I can't keep track of how many people have come
to me with computer problems that do not have possesion of the discs for the
software on their computers. Many had purchased from small local computer
retailers. These retailers have to compete and that means they have to
compete in a market that software theft drives pricing. The way I look at it
is I have used XP Pro for five years now and that works out to $30/yr or
$2.50/mo. or a little over .08 cents a day. Now that MS can't pump out a new
OS every two years the cost is not that bad when you look at it as a long
term use.

It may have sold for that in a few places but since day one it's been easy
to find a retailer or wholesaler that would part with it for a whole lot
less. Just check your local Best Buy. It's been in the $200 or less range
for about 6 months at the local one. And online you've been able to get it
for $100 or less for a long time.
