The following URL may help you.

I have not been following this thread, but I believe each print head is
available as a consumable and user replaceable. However, since this
printer is now discontinued, perhaps the heads are no longer available??

With the amount f ink you have and cost of printer, if the heads are
available as replacement items, it may be worth your while to buy the
yellow one.

The heads can eventually wear out and require replacement.

See below for more information on testing the heads.

Hi Art,

I checked out the URL you have listed and the 2200 inkjet printer that I
have doesn't have the purple printhead latch. Also, the instructions within
the URL do not match any of the physical components within the 2200 that I
have.

Curiously, the instructions where the ink cartridges reside show
instructions for both types of printheads (the one within the URL you
provided) and the type that I actually have.

I'm going to try to see if I can contact HP by phone but I'm not too
optimistic.

You are correct; the label inside the ink cartridge cover has that number.

I have absolutely no idea where this purple cover is supposed to be.

Too many unnecessary models and variations.

OK, I finally found the printheads which are located behind the ink
cartridges -- I haven't touched the printhead from the time I installed them
some years ago and I totally forgot about them until I read the on-line users
manual.

I cleaned the magenta printhead several times and the "REPLACE MAGENTA
PRINTHEAD" message disappeared.

The YELLOW message reappeared and I cleaned that several times, but now I'm
getting a REPLACE BLACK PRINTHEAD message that I simply can't get rid of no
matter how I clean the contacts.

Each time I take an action, another component fails.

These heads aren't permanent, and do eventually wear out, so if you
never replaced them, they may all be about ready to fail.

That particular model of HP printer came with self limiting print-heads.

They would last through about three carts of ink (or an equivalent
number of droplet/cycles) and shut down, requiring replacement.

The ink tanks, had no limiting device.

Easier for HP to sell new heads, harder to defeat than ink counters like
Epson uses.

I looked at the price of a new HP printer which takes the same printheads and
ink cartridges as the 2200 printer -- it's not that much more money than
replacing the printheads and I'd get a new printer with more memory and more
features.

I'll either junk the 2200 printer or sell it for a few dollars.

Well, that's the business model printer companies are using these
days... the consumables cost more than the printer with new
consumables... hmmmm
