Floppy, I can only really comment on BT through my own experience as you have with AOHell, err, sorry
AOL
Like you I too have relatives using BT ... muggins here had to set-em-up, but it is really simple, and so it should be.
BT recommend using Ethernet,
you know my feelings on any ISP who still use USB, fact 1, BT have a sticker masking the USB socket.
I had no trouble setting-up my 'kit' or my brothers ... my Sister was a slightly different story. I had a spot of bother sending/receiving emails ... one phone call (0845 #) later and all was fixed. Yes, the 'gentleman' was of Indian decent, but I don't have a problem with who the hell I'm talking to and from where they are in the World, if they know there business. This guy was tip-top.
We can say here, most of us are well versed in PC tech ... but I can also see, using my Sister as an example, why other people complain ... my sister can read, and despite the CD holding your hand every step of the way to set-up your equipment, she just gave up. She is nearlly 60
I'll expand on that ... BT give you 2 'filters' that you can use
if needed, she used both on the same line ... one upstairs by the PC and one downstairs on the main BT socket ... it don't work like that.
She was going to use both the Ethernet & USB cable supplied, 'cos she is a woman and there should not be any bit-n-bobs left over, they is very logical like that, woman.
Anyway ... I have had no 'problems' and I 'bought' the best deal at the time I moved in ... you may also remember I have a free mobile phone off them too.
Innit nice to hear good things about so called bad companies.
