Bruce, I had considered this option but thought the dual boot would be the
better choice. Under a VM machine, do I have to install each software
package for each OS, or will the VM take care of this for me. BTW, this
sounds like a very workable solution for me.

Thanks,

You'd have to install any software you want to us on the virtual
machine onto said VM; it acts as if it were a completely separate computer.

Interesting. They had stopped that practice for WinXP after so many of
the installation CDs found their way to being sold on eBay, so I'd
assumed they'd steered the same course with Vista.

The last Dell I purchased (a "cheapie" pre-equipped with Vista Home
Premium) included all I have described.

And the hand-made-to-order computer I recently purchased from a local
shop also included a full "OEM" copy of Vista Ultimate. This one was
not Bios-Locked, either. I had to activate it after installation. The
various disks for the motherboard, etc. were also included, as well as
the boxes the devices came in (all retail, off their shelves), at my
request..

Of course, I paid an arm-and-a-leg for the system, so expecting a full
copy of Vista Ultimate was not unreasonable, under the circumstances.

Including the OS.

And the VM even appears like one to Windows Product Activation, so the
OS will have to be activated after installation (or, at least, this is
true for Apple Intel Machines using a Virtualization Technology of
some sort (or even Boot Camp) to run Windows Vista.) Never used VT on
a non-Apple Windows PC before, so I could be wrong.
