How Screwed up can the formatting of an IDE disk get ?

The ones that Zvi Netiv describes as 'BIOS pulling'.
Unfortunately he does appear to use that term for 2 different phenomena:
Either using (pulling) the MBR contents as manual setting in CMOS and-or using/
saving Cmos values as a fixed capacity setting on the drive's identification sector.
Sounds incredibly stupid.

Like any bios limitation except for 528MB, 8GB and 137GB isn't a complete ****up?
