How much would you spend on a new PC if you were making one from scratch (realistic prices, not a fantasy PC ;)). Prices are in £ and $ for ease :)

i'd spend up to £1500, if i really needed a decent PC but probably go for something in the £700-800 range

My max would be $700. I build all of my own and can do it fairly cheaply.
:D

This is not fantasy but in the last 5 years I have spent over £3000 for the two complete new rigs that I built. In 2000 I spent over £1200 to set up one and continued to upgrade with minor additions or replacement till about March 2002 when I built another one and this time spending close to £1500. The one I am using now is still good enough as I bought top of the line at the time of purchase. Basic specs are

CPU 2.53 Ghz
RAM 512MB Corsair Low Latency (CL2)
HD 2 (80GB WD with 8MB cache and 120 GB Seagate 8 MB cache SATA)
Audigy Sound Card
Lacie Dual Layer DVD burner
Asus DVD Rom
Philips LCD Monitor 17"
etc etc

Since this rig is not being used for gaming at all it is still having very good specs for all the other applications and being dual boot machine.

I may this time put off building another one for about a year. :)

£700 is about my limit too, as prices increase so quickly to get an extra 10-20%. Components are getting so cheap now that you can build something decent for £500 quite easily.

no need to spend much over a grand. could have fun trying though ;)

You've just given me a great idea ;) Check the Hardware forum in a few mins :)

I'd have to say that I did recently build a decent game rig for just about $800.00 but would like to spend about $1,500.00 if I could save that much.

A grand would do me! But I am a spendthrift, so cough cough get me out of this shop.

I would probably max out at £1250 ish.

As that's the current total mine stands at with TFT and some of the upgrades i've stuck in it.

Chris

i would pay atleast 2000$ for a new 1, atleast!
for 700$ and 1000$ you get piece of **** with low clock and low ram

I'd build me own gaming monster for around £700 :).

me too! ;)

but if i had to get a monitor mouse speakers etc etc for a new computer my price may have to go up some what !

posiibly over £1000+ :o depends on the type of things i get ... for example i would have to get a 5.1 set up which already ( for a goodset ) will set me back £100 !

Dunno, really, I just keep upgrading, I tend to just swap out motherboard/memory/cpu/cooler/vid card every 18 months or so.

I've never really thought what a new system would cost.

Frightening, innit?

I'm tired of building my own and others' pcs, I'll spend 1000 quid on a Mac and let Apple build the next one.

I think that is the stupidest thing about the computer industry. Everybody buys a PC, when Macs are infinately better. If only more software was made compatable with macs windows would die. Actually Mac need to reduce there prices by about 10000% before many people buy them :P

thats what ithink anyway :P

They're not you know, they're really not.

Under-powered and over-priced.

I mean, yeah, ok, they work ok and they usually look sweet, kinda like Bang and Olufsen 'Hi-Fi' really.

For those with more money than sense, in other words.

Thats the biggest drawback about Macs, they are too damn expensive :( I agree with what you say about comparing them to Bang and Olufsen, they look great but aren't as amazing as you'd think. I think apple are quite happy about that though :)

Don't actually know anyone with a Mac now :o
