Why not just get a Mac, then everything would work great!!!! With one
machine :-)

I've considered it :-)

I know I'd get one before a ever loaded winXP on any machine I own!

Another example of this is while the scanner works better in linux, my
canon printer works -much- better for photo printing in windows with the OE
canon drivers, my epson printer seems about the same either way.

I know my Mustek 1200 CU works far better in Server 2003 than Windows ME, but
in that case, I think it's at least partly to do with the better memory
management of the newer OS, than just the driver. Not saying there aren't
driver differences, just adding that scanning can be memory intensive, and an
OS with superior memory management can make a big difference.

Don't get one like mine. Dead in a week.

As most reasonable people rationalize that can happen with any piece of
electronics. Maybe it was dropped in transit or bumped at the store.

The thing I found is that Apple tech support/customer support has far
out shined my expectations. If I was to give any computer purchase
advice it would be don't buy from Comp"Sleez"USa.

Most electronics fail either early or near their MBF. Mine just failed
early. It will be fixed, gratis. Apple is good people.

Thanks. I knew it was a hog but I never knew how to really optimize it.
I've got a dual P3-800 with 1GB ram and 5 hard disks. I was never sure
how many scratch disks I should set up, but it sounds like I've got
enough ram. My scanner is limited to 600 dpi optical and 24 bits color
is all it returns, so it sounds like I'm ok as far as RAM goes. Most of
the time I save as JPG but when I want something better I've been using
PNG.

Is that 5 *physical* hard disks? coz if it isn't, it's not gonna help a lot.
Refering to David's 3 disks (see his reply in this thread) they have to be
on separate disks because you want simultaneous access to all three. If for
instance you have a single HD with 5 partitions this is gonna cost a lot in
terms of performance: the application will access (parts of) files
sequentially rather than simultaneously, so the disk heads will have to move
back and forth between different files (read: locations) which requires
mechanical movement and therefore is slow.

Not anymore it isn't. Now it's 6 physical disks, because I just added
another 300GB drive. What I need next is a new scanner. Thinking about
Epson 3170.

I never really understood how to optimize scratch disks for Pshop, so what
I try to do was set them up in the order of least used to most used. So
that it in theory will use the drives that appear in the list first, and
those are the drives I've picked as being the least often used while I'm
running Pshop anyways, so less chance of having to share with other disk
activity to those disks. So I've got the Scratch disks set up to go to
H:, I:, J:, because I'm seldom using those while doing Pshop stuff.
