My first rig had 64KB of Ram and I thought it was pretty fast, my kids laugh at me now when I tell them the specs of my first rig. No matter how much ram you have in your machines today, tomorrow when your kids are grown up you will be ashamed to tell them the specs of your machines :D

Today, I voted for 1 GB for comfortable computing. However, the requirement can change depending on what software one uses and how impatient or patient one is with the response time of the PC.

i belive 1 Gig will be fine for most people.... but im not like most people :D
this is why i have 2 Gigs

Answer of this question varies based on your requirements. I am running my PC with 521MB and its working fine. But for the applications like Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver as well as like MAYA.. it is recommended to have 1 GB.. but in case of 2 GB it may give excellent performance... so based on the application that you want to run on your PC, you have to decided it. But for normal home usage 512MB is more than enough ...??

Any support ?

Does anyone remember the speccy? That was my first "rig" it had a whopping 128kb and built in cassette recorder!!!

Dont get excited people, but it could display anything up to and including seven colours onscreen.... at the same time!!!!:p

Ah those were they days!

Anyway i'm running 1gb on my PC but i'm starting to find it a little sluggish at times now, but really only during gaming, so i reckon you could still get way with 1gb minimum for the average user

Ram

The amount of RAM required to run new OS's and software applications has increased quite considerably over the past few years, and yet some computers still only come with 256MB RAM.

What do you consider the "baseline" to be for the average system to run well?
For me the best is 2G, especially if you're using multimedia software like photo and video editing...

We must really be showing our age here.

From reading some of the posted comments. A few members were descibing their early machines, mine was 4Mhz processor speed and 16K of RAM, a black and white monitor and those chunky block graphics. Pretty sad if you can remember the TRS-80, I have actually got the pocket version and an NEC PC-8201A, now thats antique.

for anyone with 64k or less of ram.... what could you do on those machines?

If you know what you are doing, you can disable a bunch of useless resource-hogging services that are installed in the Windows XP default setup. Then your system will run great with only 512 MB of memory installed. If you don't do this you may need twice this amount for optimal performance.

My OS consumes about 220 MB of memory when I first boot up. With 3 IEXPLORER windows open, I'm using 310MB. Use Task Manager to see how much process memory you are using. Look under "Commit Charge: total". This shows the total amount of process memory your system is currently using in KB. Divide by 1024 to convert to MB. "Peak" shows the maximum amount of process memory used since you booted up. The unused RAM will be used by "system cache" to do things like file caching.

I just put in 2 gig of ram...£104 from ebuyer...and the difference from 512 mb is astounding, well worth the expense.

There is no game at the moment using 2Gb of ram.

Everquest 2 will take advantage of 2 gigs of memory to boost performance.
Also most MMORPG will load faster with 2 gigs, so ive heard.
