How do you edit source in Firefox?

Same way. You just open the file in Notepad seperately.

So it's not really the same way at all -- you need to use Notepad
to do it. The OP is talking about directly editing the source
after viewing it from within the browser. Firefox seems to have
disabled such functionality, because when viewing a source from
within FF the "Save As" menu is disabled -- perhaps on purpose?

What I miss from IE is a big "Edit" button that lets me edit the
local page I'm viewing. Surely such an extension for FF exists?
But I can't find one.

Which is exactly what you do in IE. So it IS exactly the same
way.

FF is a browser, not an editor, and the removal of those
functions was intentional and necessary to make FF what it is
intended to be - a lean, mean, BROWSER.

As I said before, you'll find it in the full Mozilla suite.

No, what I meant is that IE has an Edit button which you can click
to open the source in Notepad to directly edit it. In Firefox, it
doesn't, and you have to manually launch Notepad, browse to the
file, select it, and then edit it. So it's not the same thing.

Hmm, wonder if there's an extension for that?

Yup. It's called MozEX. It doesn't create a big button... you just
right-click anywhere in a page and choose 'mozex' to view/edit source
**in the program of your choice**.

I'll even give you a head start: click Tools, Extensions, Get More,
Navigation, find MozEX, click Install, Install now. Then read the
MozEX webpage for setup instructions.

P.S. In addition to the many fine Mozilla USENET newsgroups which
welcome Firefox questions, and the web-based Firefox forum, Netscape
maintains a Firefox newsgroup on their own secure server. See

Hmm, I installed it but there no options to edit the paths. When I
select "View Page Source" I get an error about c:\windows\temp not
existing (it doesn't, and I'm hesitant to create it). So I checked
the Extensions menu to change the paths, but there's no entry for this
extension in there to modify. :( I'd rather point it to my existing
temp path, rather than create a new folder just for one app. Oh well.

Or, get it faster here: http://mozex.mozdev.org/

Shame it doesn't work for me. :(

For some reason I actually found it worked better when installed my
way, plus it gives you a chance to look at all the other extensions.

Once you've installed it and exited and restarted FF, MozEx should
appear under Tools | Extensions. Click the "options" checkmark icon
next to MoxEx to choose your Temp Directory, select your applications
etc. Back under Tools | Extensions, click the "home" icon to go to
the same page you suggested, and read the FAQ file if you need the
exact command to set up Notepad.

I did install it your way, actually. I just posted the link above
when I saw its home page listed after following your steps. :)

It doesn't appear under there for me. Using FF v0.9.2 now, and even
tried to re-install Mozex, to no avail. The author hasn't responded
to my e-mail, either.

Anyway, as a developer I just wrote a quick exe to open Notepad with
the source file when CTRL+U is pressed in Firefox. Much easier! :)
