How can I send documents that people can actually open

When you send an attachment via Outlook that is using RTF, the attachment
will not open in Outlook Express. There is another kb article on this on
the MS site, if you'l like to look for it.

What Other than Word, what rosoft software knows has RTF as a known
data format ?

Tom,

OK. Will take your word for it, but this contrary to my experience, a
test, and I can't find a KB article.

1. Created RTF file in Word 2003.
2. Sent it via smtp to an internet mailbox as attachment using Oulook 2003
3. received it via IMAP to an Outlook Express (on XP) client
4. double clicked on attachment and it opened correctly in Word 2003

I see KB articles about *messages* composed in RTF format, but have
found nothing about *attachments* in RTF format. Messages and
attachments are different.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Word, Works, and Wordpad ... Non Microsoft software would include
Abiword, OpenOffice and I would guess...can't check since I don't have
it anymore ... WordPerfect.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

If you use Microsoft office software to create documents - like Microsoft
Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc - and you are not certain if the party receiving
has compatible software to open a file then you can include a link to the
Microsoft Views. These are free downloads that people can use to open and
read files created with their corresponding applications
http://www.microsoft.com/office/000/viewers.asp

Other options have been presented in this thread. One that is particularly
useful is the idea of converting the file to a .PDF before you send it. You
can also include a link to Adobe Reader which is free PDF reader and quite
universally accepted http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html

If you would like other suggestions e-mail me an example of the files you
are trying to send out. You can send the attached files to

WORKS uses the .wps extension for its default format. That
format
Code:
is very different from WORD or WORDPERFECT.
MS does have a converter for the WORD program to open WORKS
files.

WORKS will allow you to resave the file using the "file/save
as" command and you can select the format that is most
compatible with ALL word processor programs. It is best to
save the file the first time in the default and then open
the file with your word processor (WORKS) and then make a
direct conversion. If you daisy-chain format changes you
will get more garbage.

You should include a note in each email indicating what
program was used to create the file and what format the file
was sent as. Most word processors can handle .rtf, most can
also open .doc, some can open .wps (if they converter
program is installed). The proper procedure to open the
file would be to open the appropriate program (WORD,
WordPerfect, etc) and then use the file/open command to
select the file, in that way the word processor program
would see the file and begin the conversion.

You can try the freeware program cutepdf. Search Google
It installs as a printer driver. When you print from any Windows program with the Cutepdf driver, a "save as...." pdf box pops up asking you for a name and location to place the file. You can then go to Start, My Recent Documents, click on the file, and it will load into Acrobat reader so you can double check the formatting. Then click on it's email toolbar button and it should attach it a new email ready to send

Bear in mind this is good only if you do not want them to make any changes to the document. Unless they have the full version of Adobe Acrobat installed...

Good luck
Ji

I don't think there is a way for you to do that. You should contact Adobe.

When you open the .pdf file, click on the little floppy disk icon on the
toolbar, and you can save the file and email it to anyone.

Hi,

You will need a third party plug-in for that. These are generally not cheap,
as pdf is a file format proprietary to Adobe products. There is one from
Scansoft here:

I have version 6 Reader and this works for me, select the
TEXT select tool, select the text and paste it into WORD.

Hi Douglas,

May I ask why you need to convert to .doc or .txt? If people can't read it
they can download and use Acrobat Reader free, and it's written for many
different operating systems. The purpose for .pdf (aka portable document
format) is so people on different computer systems can view a document on
their system the same as another person on a different system... it looks
the same no matter what system it's on.

If it's a matter of being able to edit the file, then other people have
posted ideas.

My deepest appreciation to all of you for taking the time to respond

I asked the question because a friend of mine oftens has problems with Acrobat, and recently could not open a link I sent her

Since receiving your feedback I have encouraged her to contact Adobe and enquire as to how she can correct the problem

Once more, many thanks to you all.
