really?

i did not really know of this

thats really bad then. is this only true if one accepts files? or does it come through the same connection ports as msn?
I'm no expert on it, all I know is that my 3 daughters and assorted friends of theirs, nieces & nephews use that thing and they're always getting hit by all sorts of nasties. I'm assuming they have to agree to accept a file, but I'm really not sure. I've warned them time and time again but still the same old rubbish finds it's way onto their hard drives. Latest one was a folder in Program Files named 'Download Owns' I had to go into safe mode to get rid of that, then clear out the registry entries.

For p2p my lot only use Win MX so no viruses or nasties there, unlike with some other p2p programs.

They also visit the O2 mobile phone site and something called 'Face Party' I believe, but I don't pry so I'm not that sure.

And all that despite having Spyware Blaster installed, a hardware firewall and running AdAware V1.04, Spybot and AntVir every day.

MSN Messenger should be OK, it only downloads stuff when you accept it and its pretty secure (I've been using it for about 5 years). Its probably "funny programs" that are passed round between mates on MSN with the file transer function - some people at uni are infested with spyware from things like that.

Dear Floppy

I don't know how old your kids are but my 2 x 15 year olds were wanting to get into Face Party and I had a look at it with them and wasn't sure about how 'ok' it was in terms of image and content etc.... Having teenage kids is a very difficult balance and notwithstanding some of the potential risks with MSN, I think I would rather go with that option. You might wanna check out Face Party if you get a sec and makeup your own mind.

Eldest, who lives with me, is 17 and a half. She has a head on her shoulders, I've given her free rein on the net since she was about 13. It's striking a fine line between keeping them in kid gloves and letting them know about the real world I suppose. She's kinda streetwise too, I suppose, SE London girl.

The other two (twins) will be 16 on Sunday, they live with their mother in Glastonbury. I don't know what their surfing habits are now, but about twice a year I usually have to clean their hard disks for them as well. If anything, they're more sussed than their older sister, although I don't see an awful lot of them now, we split in July '02.

Getting back to swearing, in real life I cuss all the time :D It's bad, I know, but that's just me. On meeting somebody new though, I never swear, I let them take the lead, if they cuss, then so do I :) And call me odd, but I still feel uncomfortable swearing in front of females. Stupid really, as a lot of the women I know utter profanities that would shock a London Black Cab driver ;)
