How to Close a Hotmail Account
To close a Hotmail account, stop using it. After thirty days any unused
account becomes inactive. After ninety days, the Passport becomes inactive.
You can also close your Hotmail account from within the account itself. To
do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Help on any Hotmail page.
2. Type Close Account in the keyword search section of the Help screen.
3. Click the Close Your Hotmail Account tip within the Help screen.
4. Click the Close Account link that is highlighted in blue.
5. Read the instructions. When you are satisfied that you understand the
terms associated with an account closure, click Close Account.
Thank you for your help with this, but this suggestion will close my
Hotmail account,NOT remove the e-mail address I want to remove.

Removing a Hotmail address and closing a Hotmail account is the same thing,
Bob. Understand that doing so will also remove (delete; cancel) the
Messenger and Live.com/.NET Passport account associated with the address.

I'd recommend contacting Hotmail Support: Maybe they can understand what you
want to do. Good luck.

Yes, I have another e-mail address that I use. No longer using the one
I
want to remove does not work. This has been pestering me for months,
and it
has not gone away.

So why is it impossible for you to login ONLY to your valid or wanted
Hotmail account? Just don't bother logging onto the old account. As
long as you login to the old account, you will keep it alive. If you
are not logging onto the old account then you cannot get any e-mails
sent there.

Logon to the old account if you still can. Then open the help page and
search on "close account" or "cancel account". They should show a link
for cancelling your account. All that does is deactivate the account.
It does not delete the account. Any e-mails sent to the deactivated
account will bounce as undeliverable. It will take 3 to 6 months before
an idle account actually gets deleted. Until then, you can login back
in, in which case you get prompted to reactivate the account that you
deactivated.

From your other posts in the subthreads, the only thing that is clear is
that you don't know what you want to do. It is impossible to help with
an undefined problem. You say that you want to delete a Hotmail
account, then you say you want to delete a contact, then you make other
statements that don't match up. So what is your real intent?

Do you want to delete a Hotmail account?
If so, read my other post about finding their help web page with the
link to close your Hotmail account which only deactivates it. In 1 to 3
months of being idle (i.e., never accessed), your freebie account will
become deactivated automatically. If you deactivate or it is
automatically deactivated, you won't be able to reactivate it anymore
but it does not get deleted until about 3 to 6 months later (which no
one can use your username until the account eventually gets deleted).
Different auto-deactivate and auto-delete rules apply if you have a paid
account. I didn't see you ever mention if you have a paid or freebie
account.

Do you want to keep the Hotmail account but change the e-mail address in
the From header in the e-mail that your recipients get? You can't. If
you send from a Hotmail account, your e-mail address there gets used.
They don't let you lie about your e-mail address.

Do you want to keep the Hotmail account but delete a contact?
If so, you said there are no entries listed in your address book in
their webmail interface. You can't delete what isn't defined. If you
don't have any contacts listed, there are none to delete.
