Such as Seagate selling mass-market cheap tat that appeals to OEMs
on price grounds instead of slightly more expensive but more reliable units?
Nope.
Of all the drive makes I've found Seagate to be the most troublesome,
Yeah, and its likely no coincidence that they are the only ones manufacturing in china.
although I admit I don't have too much recent experience
with them since nowadays I avoid them whereever possible.
I know many people rate them but it's never been my experience.
I suspect many people simply rate whatever happens to be fitted in their machine.
Sure, but plenty have enough of a clue to realise
that that is a pathetically inadequate sample.
I havent personally ever had a maxtor drive of
mine fail and havent actually owned one either.
I've had drive failures from all the main manufacturers
and can confirm none of them are truly bullet-proof.
Sure, but that is an entirely separate issue to whether some
drives are notorious for a higher than normal failure rate.
Absolutely classic examples of that are the IBM 75GXP and the Fujitsu MPGs.
BOTH of those have generated full class action suits because
of the utterly obscene field failure rates and the manufacturer's
response to that utterly obscene field failure rate.
Thats the reason IBM flogged their hard drive operation to
Hitachi, and why Fujitsu gave up on 3.5" IDE drives completely.
_In_my_experience_, the best reliability seems to come from IBM/Hitachi units,
Have fun explaining the utterly obscene result seen with the 75GXPs.
although it's still a little early to establish the
true long-term reliabilty of Hitachi-branded units.
Far too early to say in fact given that you dont see
spectacular duds like the 75GXPs very often, fortunately.
