HL2 just the plain truth

So what? That wouldn't cause a delay.

How do you figure that? If their intention is to release a game that
is as cheat-proof as possible, then of course it would.
Could you imagine what would happen if HL2 was released, and on it's
first day of use the servers are full of cheaters?
You do realize that the douchebags that make the cheats are absoloutly
DROOLING over the thought of ruining another game, right?

Why is it that anyone with an ounce of common sence can see that Valve and
its counterparts had no intention of releasing the game on time and this cat
and mouse crap about code being stolen is the worst smoke screen ever. Speak
with anyone who has seen the "stolen" code and they will tell you that the
game was no where near being done.

The game wasn't done because the stolen copy was beta, and I suppose those
arrests in Europe are smoke screens too?
It isnt that i expect better from the
game makers, quite the contrary...it was a good plan to say it was stolen
when they realized they were not going to make the date or the second date
or the third...well you get the point. But why the hell do all of the major
publications and web sites back this claim. I was sooooo certain that i
would be playing HL2 well before Doom3 ever hit stores and looky looky what
is in stores next week......At this point i am just more pissed that vampire
bloodlines is being held back (it uses the same engine and by contract can
not be released before HL2).
Well who out there agrees with me?????

I can tell you are new at this, never believe software release dates

No, the source code theft was real. It's just Valve used it as a excuse to
delay the game even more. Sure, the theft of the source would require them
to rewrite the multiplayer part of the game, but how long could that take?
I'm not sure, but I think it's been a year since Valve got hacked.

How do you know thats all they had to rewrite? How long does it take to
rewrite that part of the game? How many games have you written exactly?

There was a report a couple of months ago from Valve that the alleged
perpetrators were detained. Funny that we have not heard anything
further, isn't it ? Like their identity....... Or maybe I am reading
the wrong news reports ?

It depends on how old they are, if they are minors you won't see names
mentioned

Whoa. Relax dude. Someone else posted that Valve admitted the game wasn't
even completed during the source theft, so the argument is moot anyway.

Apparently you should set higher goals for yourself at least. Starting with
"I will google for at least an hour before posting a troll, maybe I'll have
enough facts to make it a decent one that way".
That might be the most sublimely insouciant bit of usenet advice I've
every seen.
All you kid write that down.

no, valve stated that the computer they thieves leeched the code off had
incomplete code on it, the stolen code was from a pc not from the grunt room
with updated code.

nothing...........

Did Doom 3 ever have a release date? Doesn't ID Software always that a game
will be done when it's done?

You mean like Half Life 2 when Gabe said;

"We've already spent millions into this project, and we're willing to
spend as much as we need to make this the best first person experience
ever. If that means delaying the game to 2005, we'll do it without any
hesitation. If it means sinking another $20 million into the project, we
can do it."

As for the D3 release date - iD may not of given one. But D3 was
supposed to run on a cutting edge GeForce 3 which should give you some
idea.

Personally I'm not really bothered either way re: D3 or HL2. But to
critise HL2 for things which D3 is equally guilty of is grossly unfair.

So you would have them release a game full of multiplayer cheaters, or
would you rather they make it as secure as they can?

<snipped>

I find this quote interesting. Anyone know how much money the
biggest selling game of all time made? (That question was not
rhetorical, btw)

That may millions seems an awful lot to invest in a game that
may not do that well. (Although it will be a "must have" for me)

Or, are they counting on online revenues?

I have no idea. But that's not to say they did spend this much money on
HL2. I took it to mean that they want to make HL2 the best they can -
time and money no object.

So you would have them release a game full of multiplayer cheaters,

The thiefs 'sold' a copy of the code, they did not insert
'multiplayer cheats' into the code on their way out.

would you rather they make it as secure as they can?

They are going to make it 'secure as they can' anyway,
regardless of when the game is released. So how does
delaying the game prevent cheating?

a) Of course it will do well
b) They are not just writing a game, but an engine that stands a good
chance of being licensed by other developers, which is where the big
money in the industry is.

No, they didn't. When finding security flaws in software you usually have to
reverse engineer the network protocols involved and other things to develop
a cheat for a multiplayer game. When you have the source code, you don't
have to do any reverse engineering. You can just look at the source and find
vulnerabilities.
They are going to make it 'secure as they can' anyway,

delaying the game prevent cheating?

I guess they'd have to change the multiplayer code, so that the cheaters'
job wouldn't be easy. Delaying a game doesn't prevent cheating, but it might
make it harder to find the cheats.

LOL !

Guilty conscience.

I'll email Gabe :-)

I hope he's too fat to even click on the mouse!

I just a read a snip from a computer magazine about the thieves gotten
caught, but there was nothing new on the story.

Ya know, I shoulda thought about that..............

I'm sure there were major bucks made off of Quake 3's engine.

How do you figure that? If their intention is to release a game that

Then by your reasoning they would *never* release the game.

Could you imagine what would happen if HL2 was released, and on it's
first day of use the servers are full of cheaters?

There is not one particle of evidence that whoever
"stole" the code has made cheats, that's something you made
up.
