HL2 just the plain truth

Why is it that anyone with an ounce of common sence can see that Valve and
its counterparts had no intention of releasing the game on time and this cat
and mouse crap about code being stolen is the worst smoke screen ever. Speak
with anyone who has seen the "stolen" code and they will tell you that the
game was no where near being done. It isnt that i expect better from the
game makers, quite the contrary...it was a good plan to say it was stolen
when they realized they were not going to make the date or the second date
or the third...well you get the point. But why the hell do all of the major
publications and web sites back this claim. I was sooooo certain that i
would be playing HL2 well before Doom3 ever hit stores and looky looky what
is in stores next week......At this point i am just more pissed that vampire
bloodlines is being held back (it uses the same engine and by contract can
not be released before HL2).
Well who out there agrees with me?????

You really think they'd concoct a story like that and get the FBI involved
and risk going to prison all over a game ?! And the hacker in Germany they
arrested is taking the fall for Valve ? Youve watched too much Xfiles mate.

Games get delayed. It can be annoying but it's inevitable. Doom 3 is
only finally hitting the shelves after, what, a 2 year delay?

Um, you say it's bs that the code was stolen but then go on
to speak of those that have seen the code. When you get some
facts, bring 'em. Until then...

You're missing the point.
The question isn't "was the code really stolen?"
The right question is "doesn't matter if it was stolen,
how is that an excuse to delay the game?". Even if it
was stolen, that only means that some third party possesses the code.
Does not mean that Valve no longer possesses the code.
Stealing code is not like stealing a tangible object, like a car.
"Stealing" means a COPY was stolen. The code was backed up on numerous
servers, numerous workstations. and if someone did somehow "steal" the
code, that really means
they copied it, not physically removed the only copy.
So when I first heard of this, my only thought was
"so what? Why would that delay anything? Now Valve and a third party
have the code."

Having suffered Steam for the past few months, that's certainly not
ready to start distributing games either. Some days it takes 15
minutes to log on, and when it does it invariably wants to download
updates for another 20 mins.

Because it's possible that with the original code someone could reverse
engineer multiplayer cheats with it.

But that's beside the point. IIRC Gabe has said that the theft isn't
the cause for the delay.

No, the source code theft was real. It's just Valve used it as a excuse to
delay the game even more. Sure, the theft of the source would require them
to rewrite the multiplayer part of the game, but how long could that take?
I'm not sure, but I think it's been a year since Valve got hacked.

Did Doom 3 ever have a release date? Doesn't ID Software always that a game
will be done when it's done?

You seem to be making your comments based on information that is about a
year old.

I hardly think the FBI was involved in a hoax. I think you're
mistaken.

That's because there are on-going Service of Denial Attacks going on
at steam. Which is another reason why this steam crap will fail.

They have stated multiple times by now that the delay was *not* due to the
code leak, but rather them misjudging the amount of work left to be done
when they stated the sept 30 date.

Welcome to a-year-ago.

Apparently you should set higher goals for yourself at least. Starting with
"I will google for at least an hour before posting a troll, maybe I'll have
enough facts to make it a decent one that way".

You do recall correctly, it was admitted not long ago that the game wasn't
ready for release, regardless of the hack. The hack was a problem, but not
the sole cause of the delay.

Yeah, Doom has not been delayed for 2 years, we have only saw it for the
first time about 2 years or so ago!

I hardly think the FBI was involved in a hoax. I think you're

There was a report a couple of months ago from Valve that the alleged
perpetrators were detained. Funny that we have not heard anything
further, isn't it ? Like their identity....... Or maybe I am reading
the wrong news reports ?

read up on the headlines before you post. the source code stolen was part of
the authentication code, they had to rewrite that and reintegrate the game
code into the new rewritten code.

Better this way, than Valve releasing the game before it's finished, like
Activision does with its in-house games...
