I have downloaded several programs and to open them and use them they need to
connect back to their internet servers but I am getting communication errors.
The programs will work correctly though if I am in safe mode. Any
suggestions?

Learn to use your firewall.

That was quite rude. I turned my firewall off and it still doesnt work. I
am reporting you. All I am trying to do is get some help from nice helpful
individuals.

I have MSCONFIG up, what are you suggesting I need to do?

Disable all startup items, reboot, see if the problem remains. If not
then you know it was one of the startup items causing the problem, so
reenable them one at a time until the problem reappears which will let
you know which one caused the problem.

You said the problem goes away when booting into Safe Mode which does
not load the startup items. msconfig lets you disable all of them and
selectively reenable them one at a time to diagnose the problematic
startup item.

I tried that and with the start up programs disables I am still having the
problems. Do you know how to check if I have a hidden firewall?

Unfortunately Microsoft decided not to include all possible startup
items in its msconfig utility. Try using AutoRuns from SysInternals.

Since the problem goes away when booting into Safe Mode, it is
something loading in normal mode that is causing the problem.

I have yet to find any firewall that hides its presence. I know of
one IPS (intrustion protection software) product that will hides its
user interface (but not going to mention it to cause even more
problems). If you don't see a tray icon or Start menu entry for a
firewall then you are probably only using the Windows-included
firewall. In that case, right-click on the connectoid for your
network connection (Network applet in Control Panel) and check if the
Windows Firewall is enabled or not. For now, disable it. If you do
see a tray or Start menu icon for a firewall then only use that one
and disable the Windows Firewall (only 1 firewall should be active at
a time, and the same for anti-virus software).

What other security software have you installed? Anti-spam,
anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware, or anti-something else?

And what are these "downloaded several programs"? A discussion
steeped in vaguities results in vaguely focused responses.

I be quaking in my boots.

Learn to use msconfig.exe.

You're a moron and I'm close to reporting you myself. If you're having that
bad a day, go back to bed and get some rest or visit the neighborhood ... .
You think you're hiding, but you are not; your headers still contain
location information.

Thanks for your response. How can I tell if I have 2 firewalls?

Is that your own computer? In other words, are you the only one who's
installed programs on it? If so, then to have a second firewall, it would
be one you installed yoruself, and would also most likely show up in the
System Tray where the clock and data info is.

Check the Security Center to see what XP knows about the firewall situation.
If properly installed, it knows there is another firewall, and the XP
firewall should be turned off. You shouldn't have two or more firewalls
running at any time.

Try posting the exact words and numbers if any of the error messages you are
getting. Those are probably the best info you can provide as to what's
going on. Include exactly what you did to cause them to appear, and how you
got them to go away.

Oooh, your vacuous threats have me quaking for sure. Time to put some
virtual bullets in that virtual gun of yours.

You still changing your kids diapers although they are now teenagers?
Still letting them suckle? Stop coddling them. Guide them, don't do
it for them. Or do you really not want them to learn to anything on
their own so you can remain their personal god?

Here are the errors I am getting.

Dell support when I click on it says:
"Update Process Failed
Dell Support was unable to complete the update process. This may have
occurred because your computer is not connected to the internet.
Please check your Internet connection and click Retry."

Although I am on the internet.

My son's games say:
"We're sorry -- the server has encountered an internal error (11) while
processing your request. Please try again later. If the problem persists,
contact Customer Support"

The message I get from Google earth is:
"We were unable to connect to the Google Earth servers to activate your
account."

What kind of Internet connection do you have? Dialup, Cable, DSL,
Satellite?
