my pc keeps restarting itself whenever i play games for too long or play dvds even when i have too many applications on. at first i thought it was a heat problem so changed my heatsink fan and got an extraction fan to take the heat out but it still turns off so now im out of ideas so any help will be appreciated

spec.
asus k7s8xe (think thats right)
geforce5600fx
amd2800xp
512mb
120mb hard drive seagate

Ok, first thing to do in this case is to turn off the Automatically Restart option:

control panel, then system, then click advance tab, click the settings button in the Startup and Recovery area, then unchceck the automatically restart option.

This should give you the BSOD error when your pc crashes rather than it rebooting, so you can see what error is causing your pc to crash.

Let us know what happens

ah the joys of my pc for the first time in about a month it didnt crash last night so unable to take down the error message was wondering whether it could have anything to do with moving memory from one slo to another. also resting temp for my cpu is 50c is that too high

50C is high, have a look at the HSF, is there much dust on it ? what HSF did you get ? does your graphics card have a fan on it ?

ive just bought a brand new thermalake fan: see below

Number of Fans 1 Connector Type 3 PIN Comments Thermaltake Slim Volcano 10 Highest Performance Cooler,
Specification: Fan Dimension 66x60x10 mm,
Heatsink Dimension 67x60x28.8 mm,
Fan Speed 4500 ±10% RPM,
Max. Air Flow 21 CFM,
Noise 38 dBA,
1 Ball Bearing,
3-point fixed,

also placed a pci slot fan to take air out of the system

yeah my graphics card does have a fan on it. by the way motherboard temp is 33 c if that helps

Moving memory? then you get a 'crashing' problem ... hmmm?

Temps are fine, as far as I am concerned, I run at 55, but then I like that figure & I don't have any 'crashing' ... ;)

If you followed Mekismo's good advice, I would just wait ... :thumb:

ah well the plot she thickens i changed the settings in system but still it restarted crashed 3 times last night while playing doom 3 slight flash of blue with white writing on it not enough time to get anything down and off she went and restarted

Ok ... open Administrative Tools. Double click Event Viewer then click on system. Scroll down till you see the error red circle with the X. Double click on that, then on Description at the end it will say "For More Information.........." Click on the Microsoft link and if there are any articles in the data base referring to that error code, they will come up ... if not, well don't play Doom.

Sudden Reboots

There are a lot of possible causes for sudden reboots. If they happen only when you run a particular application, that program is probably the culprit. Check the software vendor's web site for an update or look for a more stable program.

Try finding the miscreant by turning off all the applications that load automatically when Windows boots: Press Windows-R, type msconfig, and press Enter. Click the Startup tab, uncheck everything, click OK, and reboot your system. If that solves the problem, try rechecking programs on the Startup tab one at a time (reboot between each) until the problem recurs. When it does, you've found the source.

Scan your PC for viruses (which you should be doing regularly anyway), and update your hardware drivers as well.

If these actions don't remedy your PC's involuntary reboots, the cause is most likely an overheated system.

managed to find the error message in admin tools but due to the unfortunate drunken occurence of snapping my wireless connector in two i have no internet access at home and cant find anything to do with it at microsoft help so here it is

error code 0000009c parameter 1 00000000 parameter 2 8054d370 parameter 3c4734000 parameter 4 00000136 category (102) event id 1003

error code 0000009c are frequently caused by one of the following conditions:

•You are running the processor or mainboard beyond its specifications. For example, you are overclocking the processor or bus. We recommend that you run your hardware at the manufacturer-rated speeds.

•Noisy power, overstressed power strips, outmatched power supplies and failing power supplies can destabilize your computer. Make sure that you have a stable, reliable power supply to your computer.

•Extreme thermal conditions caused by the failure of cooling devices such as fans may damage your computer. Make sure that your cooling devices are all working.

•You have damaged memory or memory that is not the correct type for your computer. If you recently changed the memory configuration, revert to the previous configuration to determine what is wrong. Make sure that you are using the correct memory for your computer.

;)

I would check your memory out ... is it on the recomend list for your MB?

actually when i run sisoft sandra and do a systems check it does say something like your memory is not registered or buffered or something along these lines

Last question just been to crucial site and they dont have my mobo on there so i was wondering what the closest match would be

cheers

My first port of call will aways be to the MB manufacturer and have a look at their recomended RAM list ... if they don't have one, I don't buy the board. ;)

Ah, your MB is NOT an Asus ... it is an Asrock ... big difference there.

You would not be able to give me one of those boards as a gift ... ;)

LoL :D

Riley, you made my morning ... the problem with ALL hardware is it can fail ... the trick is to find particular hardware that doesn't fail too often.

Payin "big bucks" out on an ECS MB (just using them as an example) because they are cheaper, is, IMHO, a waste of money.

A lot of 'us regulars' build our own, and, have our own favorite hardware ... it's having available funds ready that can leave people buying the 'cheaper alternative' only to kick themselves later.

My Wife once bought me a MB for a burpday present, it took me another 3 months to finally get the rest of the stuff together before I could build my new PC ... :D

what do you think of the Abit AN7 Guru nForce2 Ultra board got about a 100 to 150 quid for the new mobo and memory
