Some popups I want to see close in about one second. An example is
http://www.intel.com/personal/desktopcomputer/dual_core/
If I click on "compare" in "Dual Core Demo" it closes in about a
second.

In IE I went to "manage add-ons", and I took out 4 things I don't
think I need, including a popup blocker. I turned off Spyware Doctor
popup blocker as well as IE pop-up blocker, but it still happens. I
went to tools, internet options, advanced tab, and everything except
"show image download placeholders" was checked under Multimedia, as
someone suggested. I have XP home, all updates.

What can I do to fix this problem?

In Internet Explorer -
Click on View in the Menu bar -
Under View, hover on Toolbars -
Make note of anything that is checked there,
including possibly a blank space -
Any third party toolbars listed there such as
Google, Yahoo Companion, My Searchbar, Starware, etc.
may contain Popup Blocker utilities that would either need
to be turned off or configured to allow popups from the website
in question, such as Intel in your case.
I am not a big fan of any of the third party toolbars,
and some of them are probably downright spyware programs.
Maybe Google is the least offensive of the bunch but you still
have to be aware of its various functions such as the Popup Blocker.
If you find some installed that you were not aware of, you should
consider uninstalling them from Add or Remove Programs
and then restart your computer and then clean out your Cookies,
Temporary Internet Files and History and scan your system with
an updated Anti Spyware program (plenty of free ones available).

I ran a complete antivirus check yesterday, I'll run another one.

I still have the problem. Any more ideas?

Running an Anti Virus scan is fine,
but what about an Anti Spyware scan?
If you are running XP and have a cable modem
type connection, you could try booting to
Safe Mode With Networking and see if the same
behavior happens in that mode.
You could also try going to Internet Properties,
Advanced Tab, Browser section and uncheck
"Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)"
and then restart your computer in Normal Mode and
test the issue again.

two things. first, are you logged into windows as an administrator?
if not, try that. second, to defeat the pop-up blocker hold down the
CNTL key while the new window is loading.

I had started those when I wrote that message, but they were taking
time. I ran five antispy programs, and they found 3 minor things. I
fixed them, still have the problem.

I think it might not be a popup blocker, because
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/mcintosh/census/1840/0081a.gif
behaves the same way, and I don't see a popup window when I go there.
It also closes in about 1 second - AND - knocks me all of the way out
of IE.

Yes, I do have that and I will try it.

I'll try that too.

I did that and now both of the items come up in the browser. However,
now clicking on a link in my email program (Eudora) causes it to lock
up. Any ideas?

Well, it worked until I logged off and back on. Now the Intel site
works, but this:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/mcintosh/census/1840/0081a.gif

causes IE to close completely. (It works in Mozilla Firefox).

I can go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/mcintosh/census/1840/0081a.gif
without any problem with my Internet Explorer
To my mind, the fact that unchecking "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)"
did make a difference, tends to point toward a spyware critter of some sort having infected
your system. Hopefully, once you have detected and removed that scumware, you can recheck
"Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)" and then reinstall your Eudora email
program if needed to get it working properly again.

Consider trying a scan with the free version of ewidow:
http://www.ewido.net/en/
No Anti Spyware program out there manages to catch all spyware that is running wild in the
Internet. I just recently heard about ewidow and have been advised that it is pretty darn good
at dealing with spyware. I scanned my own system with it a few days ago just to check it out.
No nasties found on my system, however I have been running about 5 different Anti Spyware
programs religiously for years now and always keep them up to date. You did see the posting
from Frank Saunders concerning your issue, right?

I think that maybe my copy of IE has been corrupted. That link works
if I paste it in, but not if I click from my email program. Also, if
I go to internet options and click "OK", it locks up. If I make a
change and click "apply" it locks up. If I Delete Cookies or Delete
Files, it works OK, but if I Clear History it locks up (and my history
isn't very large because I keep only 4 days).

I ran SFC and that was OK. I tried to download IE and reinstall it,
but it said that I already had the latest IE, so it wouldn't do it.

Running an Anti Virus scan is fine,
but what about an Anti Spyware scan?

I had run NAV the day before, full scan. After your suggestion, I
ran:
Microsoft Antivirus (naturally)
Spybot
AdAware
Spyware Doctor
CounterSpy
all full scans (took a few hours). Then I ran another full virus
scan, with the absolute latest virus definitions.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Consider creating a new User for yourself and log in as that new User and see if the issue still persists.
If not, then just copy over important personal files
to appropriate folders of the new user and avoid copying over anything in your currrent
C:\Documents and Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\History folder.
You will need to open Windows Explorer and then go to Tools > Folder Options... >
View tab and set it to -
Show hidden files and folders
(Uncheck) Hide extensions for known file types
(Uncheck) Hide protected operating systems files (Recommended)
The above settings will need to be set up for any Users involved.
You may need to boot to Safe Mode as the built in Administrator account to create the new
user and then restart to Normal mode and log in as the New User in order to create the profile
for that new user and then perform the copying over of needed files.
Once you are certain that all needed data has been copied over, you could then remove the
current User and set the Folder Options settings back to default if so desired.

I used a program called EndItAll to kill almost all of the programs
running in the background. and the problem went away! So now I've got
it narrowed down to about 25 things. I will reboot and kill those one
at a time to determine which is the culprit.

On Sat, 19 Nov 2005 22:39:28 -0500, Jud McCranie

It seems to be fixed now. To make a long story not quite as long (I
spent quite a few hours on it):

I used EndItAll to kill as many processes as possible. Then IE would
work for one time, usually. I rebooted and use task manager to start
ending tasks. I started in alphabetical order, ending one that could
be ended and testing. When I got to #43, StatusClient.exe (supposedly
from HP, and I use an HP printer - *), I ended it, and the problem
seemed to go away. I took it out of msconfig startup. (Later I saw
that there were two of them in there.) But the problem was back after
I rebooted. Then I used EndItAll to Close what it could. The problem
was still there. Then I used EndItAll to try to kill what it couldn't
close. The problem went away. There were only three things that were
killed that it couldn't close - msmsgs.exe and two programs with
Sunbelt CounterSpy. I removed CounterSpy, rebooted and it seems to be
OK.

I thought I told msmsgs.exe to not load, since I don't use messenger,
but it is back in my Task Manager. I haven't tried turning
StatusClient back on to see if it was part of the problem.

There were a lot more steps in there, but I left them out, trying to
hit the essential ones.

* - do bad programs sometimes use the name of good programs, to hide?

Many thanks to everyone who helped. I can just about always count on
some expert help from the MS newsgroups.

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

No "open" in the next-to-last step, but that checked out OK.
It is working now, see other message.
