Help and Support stopped, CD Drives not appearing

I dowloaded the ZSoft Uninstaller from Download.com. I ran it and decided to
remove unnecessary programs. In the list I found pchealth. I thought of it to
be a virus or something and I clicked on the uninstall button without even
thinking what would happen next. After a few days, I noticed that there
wasn't any DVD Drive in removable devices section. I attached a new DVD Drive
in my computer. A message from the taskbar said that a DVD Drive was found.
It disappeared after a few moments. Still there wasn't any DVD drive that I
could see in my computer. After that, I tried to run help and support; but it
said that the one of the required services is not currently running or
something like that. Then I replaced the files in Windows\pchealth with the
ones of my dad's comp. Then it got worse! It said that it couldn't find
helpctr.exe. I restored the files before but the same thing again! I'm stuck
at this situation. Please help!

Hopefully I restored my system back and the previous error was:
"Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not
running. To fix this problem, start the service named help and support.". I
don't understand why the DVD is not present in my computer. I had uninstalled
pchealth but still there was DVD present. But after some time I can't see
it...........

Hi Kamaljeet,

Try this first. Go into the Device Manager, and see if your DVD Rom drive is
listed under DVD/CDRom drives. You can get to the device manager by clicking
on System in the Control Panel, and then then tabbing on Hardware. Click on
Device Manager. Click on the [+] beside DVD/CD and highlight the DVD drive
right click to remove it. Reboot.

Windows will re-install a new copy of the driver. Check to see if your
drive is showing now.

See if that helps.

For the Help and Support issue:

Click Start, Run and type Services.msc
Double-click Help and Support
Set the Startup type to Automatic
Click "Start" to start the service.

Hi all! I tried CJ's method. I uninstalled and rebooted. Windows detected my
two DVD Drives, but still they couldn't be seen in my computer. I tried
Ramesh's method but there wasn't any Help and Support entry in the list.

Hi Peter! I tried your method and got to a conclusion. In the registry subkey
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
there wasn't any 'UpperFilters' entry. Only a LowerFilters entry seemed to be
there. Any help would be appreciated.

Download helpsvc.zip (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/helpsvc.zip) and unzip the contents. Extract helpsvc.reg to the Desktop and double-click to merge the contents to the registry. This restores the missing Help and Support service.

Hi again! I extracted the registry file to my desktop and executed it. I
clicked on help and support and it said that it couldn't find helpctr.exe. I
searched for the file and got it in C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries. I
executed it and it said that the service wasn't running. Then I ran
services.msc but still there wasn't any help and support entry in the list.
Please help me!

Hi Kamaljeet,

Two questions:

1. Were you able to successfully merge the REG file, or did you get any error message while doing so?
2. Did you reboot after applying the REG file? If you haven't, reboot once for the changes to take effect.

Hi Ramesh!
I had successfully merged the file to my desktop. After I added the key to
the registry, I rebooted and then ran help and support. For the DVD problem,
it was solved! Nothing was wrong with the registry. I just made one DVD drive
master and the other one slave. Now they appear in my computer.

Are you able to run the file directly from Start/Run:

c:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\helpctr.exe

What's the error message you receive now?

Never mind. By the way, do you think there is a way to solve this problem?

It says "Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not
running. To fix this problem, start the service named help and support."

R

Ramesh, MS-MVP

Type in Start, Run:

cmd /k sc qc helpsvc

Do you get the following output?

- - -
[SC] GetServiceConfig SUCCESS

SERVICE_NAME: helpsvc
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
START_TYPE : 2 AUTO_START
ERROR_CONTROL : 1 NORMAL
BINARY_PATH_NAME : C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
LOAD_ORDER_GROUP :
TAG : 0
DISPLAY_NAME : Help and Support
DEPENDENCIES : RPCSS
SERVICE_START_NAME : LocalSystem

If SC.EXE can list the Helpsvc information correctly, I don't think why the Help and Support service is gone missing from Services.msc applet.

I found the help and support service in the list but when I click on start it
says "Could not start the Help and Support service on local computer. Error
1083: The executable program that this service is configured to run in does
not implement the service.". This is another update! Well, I think this would
be the last error.................

I downloaded the helpsvcfix from your website. I ran it and clicked on
Inspect and Fix button and closed all the applications and restarted windows.
But when I ran help and support, it said that it couldn't find helpctr.exe.
Though the service was started in the services.msc list. Now we can say this
is not the last error..........
